SASCO STATEMENT
(18/02/2026)
"We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it"_ Che Guevara.
Revolutionary greetings to the entire community of MUT.
The statement serves to address the issues of which the SRC are silent about.
ACCOMMODATION
Many students of MUT including the Nsfas funded are left without accommodation and are told that there are no spaces to accommodate them. This raises questions in regards to whether the SRC along with the institution were prepared for the number of expected students to register and the accommodation required.
SASCO calls for the immediate accommodation for the stranded students who are deserving of the accommodation. No deserving students are to resort to private accommodations due to the incompetence of the SRC.
G20
The number of students wrongfully affected by the academic exclusion rule G20 is alarming, in as much as some were cleared to register most were left unattended until the very last day of registration. This lead to students finalizing their registration on the last day, causing them to loose their spaces in their previous residences and they are left without accommodation
These students were rejected by Nsfas due to the wrongful exclusion by the institution. SASCO demands that these students be accommodated, and their Nsfas appeals be approved with immediate effect.
ALLOWANCES
Classes have officially commenced and some students till date have not yet recieved their book allowances, as well as meals allowances but are too expected to academically cope. A fortunate batch was given just half of their book allowances while others were left to fend for them selves and promised a second batch.
SASCO demands that all deserving students be given not just half but their full allowance this upcoming friday as half of that allowance does not resolve all the needs of students.
For the first time in the history of MUT that the class representatives are expected to tackle financial issues of their fellow classmates while the SRC sits comfortably in their offices. This action is unacceptable, because of the fact that the class representatives are already stressed academically and must not be strained with the burden of the SRC.
TRANSPORTATION
Despite the fact that the registration is still in progress SRC expects students to have finalized everything, this is frustrating because students are left on campus by their transportation to res inorder to fend for themselves because they do not possess a res card on their person.
SASCO demands that these students be transported regardless of the absence of their res cards and must be given untill next week to have everything finalized.
SASCO also calls for the immediate provision of transportation to the students studying at North campus attending evening classes as these students are exposed to the dangers of Umlazi, namely theft. The transport will move students from North Campus to bus terminals at Seme hall to ensure their safety.
SASCO will continue to tirelessly advocate for the student's interests at all material times.
We hope the above is inorder
Kind regards
