POST RYD MEETING STATEMENT
23 April 2026

The SANCO Youth Desk (RYD) in the Nelson Mandela Region convened a meeting to deliberate on pressing challenges affecting communities across the metro.

The meeting noted with grave concern the escalating levels of crime, which continue to undermine the safety and stability of our communities. Urgent, coordinated interventions are required to restore law and order and ensure the protection of all residents.

Equally, the meeting highlighted the persistent challenges in service delivery, which continue to negatively impact the quality of life of our people. Many communities remain without adequate access to basic services, and this remains a critical priority requiring immediate attention from relevant authorities.

The RYD further expressed concern over the lack of sustainable sport, arts, and cultural programmes. The absence of these initiatives deprives young people of constructive platforms for personal development, talent expression, and social cohesion.

In response, the RYD confirmed that a range of programmes are currently being developed to address these challenges. These initiatives will focus on strengthening community engagement, advancing youth empowerment, and promoting social development.

The meeting emphasised the importance of active and ongoing engagement with young people across the metro, ensuring that their voices are heard and that their participation is meaningfully integrated into all developmental processes.

Additionally, the RYD raised concerns regarding the lack of adequate support for youth-owned businesses. The limited visibility and accessibility of institutions such as the NYDA and other relevant government departments continue to hinder the growth and sustainability of emerging enterprises.

The SANCO Youth Desk in the Nelson Mandela Region affirms its commitment to working collaboratively with government departments, stakeholders, and community structures to address these challenges and drive meaningful, lasting change.

All Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) structures and YOUNG PEOPLE of the community In the Nelson Mandela Region are hereby informed of the reconfiguration of the SANCO Youth Desk Regional Structure (RYD) in the Nelson Mandela Region.

This development follows extensive engagements and organisational processes aimed at strengthening youth coordination, enhancing effectiveness, and ensuring that the structure is responsive to the needs and aspirations of young people within the region.

The SANCO Nelson Mandela Regional Youth Desk hosted a hosted a Pathway to Higher Learning programme in Rock of Ages Church in Motherwell to empower prospective students to access universities, colleges, and funding opportunities.

The programme received attendance from all PYA structures- SASCO, ANCYL, COSAS and YCL. It was also graced by ANC Zonal and REC members.

A special appreciation to Easten Cape Midlands TVET College.
