Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Zolile Williams, convened the Provincial Political MuniMEC Forum at the International Convention Centre at KuGompo City on 01 September 2026. The forum brings together provincial and local government leaders, municipal officials and sector departments to address service delivery challenges and strengthen cooperative governance. Discussions also include preparations for the upcoming 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections.

MEC Williams emphasised the importance of municipalities maintaining clean and well-managed cities, with communities receiving essential services such as clean and reliable water. He stressed that municipalities must work towards eliminating potholes and improving the overall condition of their communities. MEC Williams also called on municipalities to prepare for the anticipated El Niño conditions, warning that reduced rainfall during the hot season could place pressure on communities and water resources, and urged municipalities to have effective disaster management plans in place.

Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) Mayor, Princess Faku, presented the municipality’s framework of presentation during the forum and outlined the municipality’s priorities. She expressed confidence that BCMM will achieve a clean audit, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to improved governance, accountability and service delivery.

On 01 September 2026, the 2nd Quarter Muni MEC Meeting commenced at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) to strengthen cooperative governance and improve service delivery across municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

The engagement was led by Eastern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr Zolile Williams.

The meeting brings together Executive Mayors, Mayors, Municipal Managers, representatives of SALGA, sector departments and Traditional Leaders to review municipal performance, reflect on the state of governance and discuss integrated approaches to resolving service delivery challenges facing communities.

In his address, MEC Williams emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperative governance through integrated planning, accountability and responsive leadership to ensure that municipalities deliver on their mandate.

The engagement is expected to conclude with commitments from stakeholders to continue supporting interventions that will improve governance, build better communities and ensure that every municipality works. The meeting continues on 02 September 2026.

Volkswagen Group Africa’s 75th Birthday Celebrations Gala Event | 31 August 2026

President Cyril Ramaphosa delivers the keynote address at Volkswagen in Kariega to mark 75 years of vehicle manufacturing in South Africa, celebrating a partnership that has become deeply woven into the country’s industrial and economic story.

Reflecting on his own memories of Volkswagen vehicles, the President highlighted the company’s remarkable journey from the Beetle and Kombi to the Golf, Jetta, Polo and Polo Vivo with nearly five million vehicles produced at the Kariega plant for South Africa and global markets.

President Ramaphosa praised the thousands of South African workers whose skills have made the plant a globally competitive manufacturing facility, noting that vehicles produced here are effectively “ambassadors” for South Africa in markets around the world.

His Excellency welcomed Volkswagen’s continued commitment to the country, including its R4 billion investment linked to the introduction of a new model, as well as more than R800 million in social investment in surrounding communities. The President also highlighted Volkswagen’s contribution to maths and science education, the LEAP school and youth employment initiatives.

Looking to the future, President Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of ensuring that South Africa remains competitive as the automotive industry undergoes major technological change. He pointed to the transition towards electric vehicles, hybrids and new-energy technologies, while highlighting South Africa’s skilled workforce, established automotive manufacturing base and critical mineral resources as key strengths.

President Ramaphosa calls for continued collaboration between government, industry and organised labour to attract investment, strengthen local supply chains, create jobs and ensure that South Africa remains a leading manufacturing base for the vehicles of the future.

Government Communication and Information System hosted a Women Entrepreneurship and Cooperative seminar at Majola Village, the program is to empower women of Majola Village following a history of community violence that led to women being victims, unsafe and sleeping in bushes.

The program also gave an opportunity for IEC to promote voter education with emphasis on ballot paper education.

Volkswagen Group Africa’s 75th Birthday Celebrations Gala Event | 31 August 2026

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe, delivers the official welcoming address at Volkswagen Group Africa’s 75th Birthday Celebrations Gala Event at the Final Assembly Plant in Kariega this evening.

In her address, the Executive Mayor highlighted Volkswagen Group Africa’s significant contribution to Nelson Mandela Bay’s economy, describing the company as an economic anchor and industrial engine of the region.

“For 75 years, Volkswagen Group Africa has been an economic anchor and industrial engine in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The largest employer in our region, VW has been a bedrock for the survival of generations of families, whilst also supporting several entities along its supplier network and value chain,” said Mayor Lobishe.

Mayor Lobishe further reflected on the millions of vehicles produced in Kariega over the decades from the iconic Beetle to the Polo and Vivo, noting their role in facilitating mobility, stimulating the economy and establishing Volkswagen as a trusted brand among generations of South Africans.

The Executive Mayor acknowledged the challenges faced by the automotive industry and reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to supporting and protecting the infrastructure that enables Volkswagen’s operations.

Cllr Lobishe also expressed the Municipality’s commitment to developing systems that support Volkswagen’s resilience, while welcoming the company’s continued investment and empowerment initiatives within local communities.

“As the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, we undertake to add the necessary impetus to efforts aimed at developing and protecting the infrastructure which supports your operations. We look forward to your continued empowering work in our communities as well as your loyalty to our city. Forward to future significant milestones on our shores!
