ECITI Welcomes Keith Ngesi Radio to Incubation Programme
AS DIGITAL content industries take the centre stage in global economic transactions, the Eastern Cape Information Technology Initiative (ECITI) is proud to be doing its bit to assist local players to develop solid enterprises.
ECITI, founded by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation as a sector stimulator for information communication technology (ICT) infused economic development in 2004, has been assisting emerging entrepreneurs to hone their business skills through incubation since its establishment.
Among the companies that have recently joined the incubator is Keith Ngesi Radio (KNR), a virtual radio station, founded by veteran radio personality and communications practitioner Mr Keith Ngesi. KNR broadcasts from the ECITI head office located at the East London Industrial Zone in Sunnyridge.
ECITI executive manager, Mr Mncedi T. Mgwigwi, said that they were thrilled to have such an innovative initiative being part of their ecosystem.
“As we all know, there is quite a lot effort that the South African Government is putting in ensuring that there is world class broadband infrastructure that allows for affordable access and usage of ICTs by all citizens. Consequently, we need to develop strong digital content entrepreneurs who will benefit from opportunities presented by having such infrastructure,” said Mr Mgwigwi.
He added that having the best broadband infrastructure without quality local content would be like having super highways without cars. “This will be a waste of money, squandering our opportunities for economic growth and leaving us vulnerable to consuming foreign content.”
Given its brand strength, KNR, according to Mr Mgwigwi, stands to be a beacon that would encourage other entrepreneurs in industries like digital publishing, software and applications development, web production, graphic design, gaming, radio, television, animation, and stills photography to build solid businesses.
Mr Ngesi said they were extremely excited to be accepted by ECITI.
“This will launch us to another level in this sector. We come fully prepared to learn and as we do we will also add value to the centre. This is the opportunity we longed for and it came at the right time,” he added.
“We can only grow from here.”
KNR started broadcasting from the 1st of April 2016, realising a vision that took root in 2014.
KNR is one of five companies that recently joined the incubation taking the number of active ECITI incubated enterprises to 31. The other new Buffalo City Metro based companies are: Creatrix Omnia (ICT); E42moro (multimedia production); Rolungover (ICT); and Umhlaba Communications (multimedia production).
