Greetings All...

So I`ve decided to start a bit of an educational post [I will be sharing some insights and requirements in terms of fire compliance and related requirements, from time to time).

1 of the most basic requirements, is for the servicing of your existing firefighting equipment...

We`ll start with fire extinguishers...

So there are a number of different types of fire extinguishers, but the 2 most commonly used, are...

DCP - DRY CHEMICAL POWDER.

CO2 - CARBON DIOXIDE.

In terms of servicing requirements for these 2 types of fire extinguishers, there are some subtle differences...

DCP - DRY CHEMICAL POWDER fire extinguishers, need to be serviced annually [once every 12 months] and they also need to be PRESSURE TESTED every 5 years from DATE OF MANUFACTURE.

CO2 -CARBON DIOXIDE fire extinguishers, need to be serviced annually [once every 12 months] and they need to be PRESSURE TESTED every 10 years from DATE OF MANUFACTURE.

The important thing to note here is DATE OF MANUFACTURE and not date of installation.

Many clients are not aware of these requirements and this unfortunately creates an opportunity for unscrupolous service providers to take advantage of clients, in that we find that NEW EQUIPMENT which has been installed in 2023, actually has a 2022 and sometimes even a 2021 MANUFACTURE DATE.

So as an example...

If a client purchases a new DCP fire extinguisher in 2023, but the service provider supplies and installs a 2022 manufactured unit, the client will effectively only get 4 years usage, before the first pressue test is due, instead of the 5 years that they were supposed to get.

The above example is for 1 single unit... if you were to look at a bigger installation, then the loss to the client/company is greatly exacerbated.

This was a bit of a long read and is only but 1 of 100`s of requirements which come with FIRE COMPLIANCE and SERVICING requirements.
