Congenital syphilis is preventable, but babies can still be affected when syphilis is not detected or treated during pregnancy. In 2024, South Africa recorded 1 552 reported congenital syphilis cases and 4 243 positive syphilis test results among children under two. The findings highlight the importance of regular testing during pregnancy and making sure cases are identified and reported. South Africa has made progress towards the global goal of ending the HIV epidemic by 2030. With more people on treatment and high levels of viral suppression, the country is making tremendous strides.

Our latest PHBSA report provides the most recent update regarding HIV Viral Load testing volumes and suppressions rates within South Africa’s national HIV programme for from 2019 to 2025.

The report shows record levels of viral suppression in 2025 while highlighting the need to strengthen testing, retention in care and routine monitoring to reach the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets by 2030.
