Almenkerk Wine Estate

Almenkerk Wine Estate Family Wine Farm in Cool-Climate Elgin, South Africa.... The high gravel and clay content eliminates the need for irrigation on the 15 hectares of vines.
(286)

Almenkerk’s 100 hectare farm spreads over south-facing slopes surrounded by pristine fynbos and fairy-tale ravines. Sauvignon Blanc’s east-west row direction allows precision management of flavour components. Red varieties are planted with north – south row directions to maximise radiation .White grapes are pressed using a nitrogen press (eliminating all oxygen). Both free run and press juice are

used, the latter’s higher phenol content giving richer wines. Sauvignon Blanc is aged on lees for 3 months, adding mid-palate weight to the fresh cool-climate acidity. Barrel fermented Chardonnay is aged on lees (3 months), rending a rich, luscious wine. Red wines are fermented naturally while skin contact ensures colour and flavour development. Each vineyard section has its own tank in the cellar to track its development over vintages. Wines are blended after 18 months, mainly in French oak, offering elegant, smooth wines with fine tannins.

A good day to take a step back.

To look at the farm, the people around us, and the place we get to work in every
day.

We came from far away to build something here.

And we are still grateful we get to do it in South Africa.

Not all wines make it this far.

The Flemish Masters Series pays tribute to the painters of Flanders.

These are the barrels that stand out when we taste. The ones we keep going back to. A bit more depth, a bit more structure, and the kind of wines that reward time.

They stay longer in the cellar. And they are only released when we feel they are ready.
You will not find them on the tasting list.

This range is reserved for our Masters Club members.

Pink Lady picking has started!

Pink Lady is not actually the variety name, it is the brand name for Cripps Pink apples. They are known for that sweet-sharp balance and proper crunch.
They need the perfect mix of sunshine and cool nights to develop their colour, which is why cool-climate Elgin suits them so well.

Happy birthday, Natalie ❤️

From all of us on the farm - thank you for keeping things running, keeping us organised, and being the centre of it all, even when everything gets a bit chaotic (especially during harvest).

We’re all raising a glass to you today 🥂

Autumn in Elgin

You can feel the season turning.

Cooler mornings again. A bit of mist over the orchards. Leaves starting to shift colour.
After the rush of harvest, the farm slows down slightly.

Not quiet. Just a different rhythm.

01/04/2026

Cellar is winding down. Petit Verdot done.
Just Mourvèdre left to pick.
