False Bay Volunteer EMS was thrilled to once again be invited to the Bits and Bobs market, held this past weekend at Fish Hoek Civic Center.

The market visitors were invited to have their vital signs taken at our table for a small donation. We had many who opted in and a few who rather didn't want to know.
We even had a brave young man who had everything checked and didn't flinch!

It was a great day. Thanks to everyone who supported us.

We have a new fund raising effort. We will be selling first aid kits for all your needs. They can also be tailored to your specific requirements.

False Bay Volunteer EMS has been super busy over the past few weeks.
We have assisted at the Noordhoek Riding Association, Durbanville Horses, The City of Cape Town Cycle Tour as well as a movie shoot. All very exciting events! Well done to the medics involved and to everyone that assisted with arranging.

Today we Celebrate our 30th Birthday!!!!! 🥳 🎉

30 years ago, today, False Bay Volunteer Emergency Medical Service was born to provide desperately needed emergency medical services to those who could not afford medical aid and a private ambulance service in the Deep South.

Today, our 30th Birthday wish is to once again provide essential emergency medical services to our community 🙏🏻

We hope to have MiLady fully operational by the December Holidays!! 🙏🏻

Do you know what to do if someone is choking?

Choking is not only scary for the patient, but it tends to cause distress in those trying to help as well, especially if they are unsure what to do!

Do you remember being told to eat bread and/or drink milk and it will help relieve the obstruction? Please don't try and shove bread or milk into a choking patient's mouth!

The correct thing to do is find out if the patient has either a complete airway obstruction or if it is a partial airway obstruction.

This can be done by simply asking the patient to attempt to cough.

Take a second to do one big cough now yourself....

What did you do immediately before you coughed out? You took a deep breathe in, right?

This tells you that if a patient can cough, they can breathe and that means that they have a partial airway obstruction.

Coughing should be able to dislodge the obstruction enough to either cough it out or swallow it down properly.

If they cannot seem to dislodge the obstruction, but can still breathe, it may be necessary to get them to an emergency unit to assist in extracting the obstruction.

Remember to stay calm and try to encourage your patient to do the same.

If your patient cannot cough it means they more than likely cannot breathe either. Call for help!!! (Emergency Medical Services)
This is a complete airway obstruction and is life threatening. The Heimlich Manoeuvre will need to be performed.
