To strengthen Taiwan's leading role in APEC's discussions of digital healthcare and to provide business opportunities to Taiwanese industries, Taiwan proposed an APEC Healthcare Sub-Fund, harnessing Taiwan's smart healthcare strengths to make a global contribution to the future of healthcare💪
The initiative is the first sub-fund focused on healthcare and was supported by all members. It will help fund related events and meetings by member economies, harnessing public-private cooperation to implement patient-centered healthcare systems, and use technology to address the challenges posed by aging populations and chronic diseases.
Director General Johnathan Sun of MOFA's Department of International Organizations signed a memorandum of understanding on a donation of US$1.5 million to the fund with Eduardo Pedrosa, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, during the Second APEC Senior Officials' Meeting, witnessed by representatives from the US and Canada.
Pedrosa stated that the fund will strengthen APEC members' ability to address healthcare challenges, in line with the goals of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the Aotearoa Plan of Action. He expressed hope that member economies will take the opportunity to engage in policy dialogues and capacity building initiatives on healthcare to strengthen their ability to address the challenges of navigating profound demographic shifts that will reshape the region’s economy and workforce, and build healthcare systems that help keep older people active and engaged in society.
