Greater Giyani Municipality officially handed over the Gawula Sports Centre refurbishment project at Headman Kraal on the 1st of September 2026, marking an important milestone in the municipality’s commitment to sports development, community upliftment and improved recreational facilities.

The refurbishment will include a new soccer and rugby field with kikuyu grass, an irrigation system, an elevated steel water storage tank, a gravel running track, refurbishment of the grandstand and combi courts, upgrading of ablution facilities and changing rooms, parking development, improved fencing, refurbishment of the guardhouse, full electrification and the installation of high mast lights. The project duration is expected to run 10 months starting from today's date.

The handover ceremony was graced by the presence of the Mayor Cllr Thandi Zitha, Head of Portfolio for Health and Social Development Cllr Manganyi TC, Head of Sports, Arts and Culture Cllr Zitha TC, Head of Infrastructure Cllr Mabunda TJJ, Ward 18 Cllr Mathonsi Agnes, Municipal Manager Mr Khoza VD, officials from the municipality’s technical department, Traditional leaders and community stakeholders.

Speaking during the handover, the Mayor appealed to the Gawula community to work closely with the appointed contractor throughout the construction period. She also urged residents to cooperate with the contractor, municipal officials and other relevant stakeholders, emphasising that the success of the project depends not only on the municipality and the construction team, but also on the community that will ultimately benefit from the facility.

In her closing remarks encouraged community members to exercise patience, protect the infrastructure and raise any concerns through the appropriate channels rather than disrupting the construction process. The community was also encouraged to support the project by ensuring that construction activities are allowed to proceed safely and efficiently. The appeal was aimed at fostering a spirit of partnership and ensuring that challenges that may arise during construction are addressed through constructive engagement.

Greater Giyani Municipality has officially handed over the site project for Phikela village upgrading of Internal streets from gravel to paving. The highly anticipated project will see the transformation of 3.4 kilometres of local roads from rugged, dusty gravel into durable, modern paving blocks. The historic milestone was marked by a vibrant official handover meeting held at the Preach Good News Church on the 31 August 2026, drawing an audience of local residents, traditional leaders, and key community stakeholders eager to witness the dawn of a new infrastructural era.

The meeting was led by a high profile delegation from the municipality, demonstrating political will and administrative commitment to fulfilling service delivery mandates. The leadership collective on-site included: The Mayor of Greater Giyani Local Municipality Cllr Thandi Zitha, Municipal Manager Mr Khoza VD, The Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) Chairperson Cllr Eric Makondo, The Head of Infrastructure Development Cllr Mabunda Thami, The Head of Sports, Arts, and Culture Cllr Zitha TC, The Head of Health and Social Development Cllr Manganyi TC and Local ward Councillors.

Addressing residents inside the Preach Good News Church, the Mayor emphasized that upgrading rural road networks remains an absolute priority for the municipality. The Mayor noted that the shift from gravel to paving is not merely an aesthetic enhancement, but a critical intervention aimed at restoring dignity, improving health by mitigating dust pollution, and boosting the local economy. The duration of the project is 10 months starting from today.

In line with Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) principles, the road construction will create temporary employment, particularly women and youth. The Mayor has concluded her closing remarks by urging the community to guard against elements of those who might attempt to stop the project for their selfish interests.

Greater Giyani Municipality hosted a vibrant Women’s Day celebration on the 28 August 2026 at Ximausa village, where Mayor Cllr Thandi Zitha delivered an empowering keynote address urging local women to draw strength from the historic 1956 marchers. Honoring the Legacy of 1956, addressing a massive audience at Ximausa village, Mayor Cllr Thandi Zitha praised the resilience of South African women.

She drew a powerful parallel between modern challenges and the bravery of the legendary icons who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956. "Be strong, resilient, and unapologetic in your pursuit of progress," Mayor Zitha urged. She emphasized that the spirit of 1956 must continue to inspire women to take up leadership roles, fight for equality, and uplift their communities. The high parofile event demonstrated a unified commitment to women's empowerment across the municipality.

The celebration was blessed by the presence of several key dignitaries, including: Members of the Executive Committee (Exco), Ward Councillors from various communities, Local traditional leaders and community stakeholders. The presence of these officials underscored the municipality's dedication to grassroots development and gender equity.

The choice of Ximausa village as the host venue brought immense joy and a sense of inclusion to the local residents and the entire ward. The day was filled with vibrant cultural performances and joyful singing. Attendees left the event feeling motivated, supported, and deeply connected to the broader vision of a prosperous, equal, and unified Greater Giyani.
