Makana Citizens Front MCF is a broad coalition of Makana citizens, dedicated to listening to our people and ending the rot in local government.

Makana Citizens Front is a civic movement, registered with the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa, to contest local government elections. You can verify our details at https://www.elections.org.za/pw/parties-and-candidates/Party-Contact-Information – search for our name. Our focus is on dissolving corruption to end service delivery and infrastructure failure. We are a local grassroots movement, accountable only to our own residents, not a distant party head office. Our office is in Makhanda but Facebook does not recognise this name, which became official on 29 June 2018, so we can’t include it in our address.

I had a sit down with Mama Martha at her home, where she lives alone.

The first thing she told me is that she does not normally welcome strangers as she is alone there, but I’m a God-sent person and she sees someone with a human heart in me.

She told me her painful story and how her dignity has been lowered and humanity destroyed.

The contractor that was building their homes destroyed her outside toilet that is connected into a septic tank under the pretext that they are going to connect her toilet inside the house.

Since then, she has been years without a proper functioning toilet.

How do you leave a single old and senior citizen of 91 years without a flushing toilet inside and a septic linked toilet outside that is broken?

She told me that she had to depend on neighbors for toilets.

Sometimes, she is afraid to go and ask for a toilet because she does not want to inconvenience neighbors.

She told me that she lost her husband (a king of her heart) many years ago, they are not only separated by death but her husband is buried in Gqeberha.

They are also separated by human design geographical settlement design.

Even when she thinks about visiting him, she lacks means and loneliness is what is killing her emotionally.

She pleaded with me that she wouldn’t like to die without paying a visit to her late husband and begged me to fix her toilet.

I cried because I lost my own biological mother at the age of 85 years in 2015. She also cried every day as I grew up with the bucket system at number 15 D Street.

I can feel the pain, suffering, and hardship that Mama Martha is going through.

I am going to personally fix her toilet and restore her dignity and humanity.

Wednesday next week, asking neighbours a for toilet will be a thing of the past.

On behalf of all God-fearing people, I apologize to this great senior citizen. What she is going through does not deserve this, and no human being deserves to live in these filthy, dirty, squalid conditions.

MCF has been fighting for water rights for years. More of what we have learnt.

Short summary:

E. coli in the water could mean contamination from a sewer leak. E. coli itself is not always bad (a few types can make you very sick) but raw sewage in drinking water can spread many other serious illnesses like cholera and typhoid.

Turning water off is bad because losing pressure lets dirt into the pipes.
