🔥 International Firefighters’ Day in Bredasdorp 🔥

Yesterday, Greyton Volunteer Firefighters had the honour of being invited to take part in the International Firefighters’ Day event in Bredasdorp.

It was an incredible day dedicated to firefighters, volunteers, and the important work done by teams across our communities. We were truly honoured to be included and to stand alongside so many dedicated men and women who give their time, energy, and commitment to keeping others safe.

A big highlight for us was taking part in the convoy parade around Bredasdorp, and we also got to show off our Unimog in the 4x4 competition, which was great fun and a proud moment for the team!

Thank you to everyone involved in organising such a meaningful and enjoyable day. We are grateful to have been part of it. 🚒🔥

⚠️🔥 HIGH FIRE DANGER DURING HEATWAVE 🔥⚠️

The Overberg region is currently experiencing very high temperatures, significantly increasing the risk of veld and mountain fires.

Dry vegetation, strong winds, and extreme heat can cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and to avoid activities that could start a fire, such as open flames, unattended braais, or burning of waste.

🚨 If you see smoke or a possible fire, report it immediately. Early reporting can help emergency services respond quickly and prevent fires from spreading.

Please contact:

Let’s work together to protect our communities, farms, natural environment, and emergency responders during this high-risk period.

🔥 What a night. What a community. What a result. 🔥

With enormous gratitude, we’re thrilled to share that the GVF Fundraiser Raffle & Auction raised an incredible R93 909 🤍
This would not have been possible without our exceptionally generous sponsors, the wider Greyton community, and the volunteers who gave their time, energy and hearts to make it all happen.

A very special mention too to JJ and Constant, whose BackaBuddy campaign raised enough to purchase a second Unimog Fire Truck for our town 🚒🔥an extraordinary achievement that strengthens our fire response capacity even further.

This fundraiser was 100% community driven, with one shared goal: supporting our volunteer firefighters and keeping Greyton safe. You showed up, you gave generously, and you proved (yet again!) what’s possible when a community pulls together.

From all of us at GVF thank you 🙏
Proud, grateful, and inspired.

A huge thank you to Toni Younghusband for the incredible article published in the Daily Maverick highlighting the work of the Greyton Volunteer Firefighters.
Your words captured the heart of what our volunteers do, the long hours, the tough conditions, and the unwavering commitment to protecting our community. It means a great deal to our entire team to have our efforts recognised and shared with a wider audience.
We’re grateful for your support and for helping tell the story of the people behind the yellow shirts. 🔥

🔥 Wildfire Training in Action 🔥

Today we hosted an awesome Basic Wildfire Training session for our auxiliary team, led by Kim from Enviro Wildfire Pty Ltd and it was next level.

The morning covered a solid theoretical foundation, followed by a hands-on practical session, giving our volunteers real world skills and confidence they can rely on when it matters most.

Training like this is a critical part of how Greyton Volunteer Firefighters prepares for the next fire season. We’re doing everything we can to stay ready, stay safe, and protect our community.

A massive thank you to Kim and Enviro Wildfire Services for sharing their expertise, and to our volunteers for giving their time, energy, and commitment 🙌🏻🔥🚒

Preparedness saves lives and we’re so proud of the team.

🔥 Why Firefighting Preparedness Matters 🔥

This photo was taken after Wednesday’s large fire and tells an important story.

Despite intense fire conditions and the surrounding area being completely burnt, this home was saved!

This outcome was not luck.

It was the result of:
Pre-planning and risk assessment
Clear communication and command structure
Correct positioning of crews and equipment
Early defensive firefighting actions
Strong coordination between teams on the ground

By identifying priority structures early, establishing safe access routes, and putting protection measures in place before the fire front arrived, we were able to defend this property while keeping firefighters safe.

Large wildfires move fast and leave little room for error. Training, discipline, and preparation are what allow crews to make the right decisions under pressure and Wednesday was a clear example of that.

A huge thank you to every firefighter, volunteer, landowner, and the support team involved. Outcomes like this show why planning, cooperation, and community preparedness truly matter. 🔥🚒

A big shoutout to the farmers and farmworkers who assisted firefighters in keeping Greyton and surrounds safe. We could not have done it without you. Thank you for your tireless efforts, your dams, your vehicles... you are very much appreciated by all in Greyton

Fire Update – Final

Good evening everyone,

The fire is now largely contained.

The fire line above Hugosdale and Lismore has been extinguished. CapeNature and WoF crews remain on that line and are currently conducting mop-up operations.

The fire between Genadendal and Greyton is contained and the area is safe.

There is no longer any threat to property.

The remaining fire activity is in the kloof near Uitkyk Kop, with another line moving toward Galgeberg. CapeNature teams are on scene and monitoring the fire as it continues to progress over the mountain and away from Greyton.

ODM will remain on scene for the next 24–48 hours to monitor the area and respond should conditions change.

I’ve been asked to relay a message from ODM, WoF, and CapeNature, extending their sincere thanks to everyone who provided food and refreshments to the firefighting teams. Your generosity was deeply appreciated and truly made a world of difference on the ground.

From my side, I want to once again thank this incredible village for standing up when it mattered most and for the overwhelming support shown to the GVF.

To our Core, Auxiliary, EXCO, Logistics, Comms and Sustenance teams, local farmers, and every individual who came forward to assist, THANK YOU! The outcome would not have been what it was without each and every one of you.

Thank you again for the unity, support, and community spirit shown throughout.

Gavin 🙏🏼
