VEU Hartbeespoort conducted an outreach in Sunway on Saturday, 23 May 2026, to raise awareness within the community about the serious reality of Gender-Based Violence, Sexual Assault or R**e and Child Abuse.

During the outreach, important information was shared regarding:
• How to identify signs of abuse
• Where and how to report cases
• What to do in emergency situations
• How the community can stand together against violence and abuse

Our goal was not only to create awareness, but also to offer hope, support, and guidance to victims and families.

🛑 If you are aware of any form of abuse:
• Report it immediately to SAPS
• Contact your local neighbourhood watch or safety structures
• Get help for the victim as quickly as possible
• Do not look away or remain silent

We would like to thank every person who was involved and made a difference. By standing together and taking action, we can make our communities safer for everyone.

The Victim Empowerment Unit of Hartbeespoortdam attended an awareness campaign at Harties High School yesterday, focusing on important challenges faced by today’s youth. Topics discussed included:

• Bullying awareness
• Alcohol and substance abuse
• Possession of dangerous weapons at school
• Teenage pregnancy

The campaign aimed to educate learners, encourage responsible decision-making, and create a safer school environment for all.

Together, we can make a difference through awareness, support, and community involvement.

The Victim Empowerment Unit at Hartbeespoortdam police station is a specialised service designed to support people who have been victims of crime. Our main purpose is to provide assistance, care and support to victims so that they are treated with dignity and respect, are protected from further harm, and can begin to recover emotionally and practically. 

What the Victim Empowerment Unit is Used For:

1. Providing a Safe, Private, and Supportive Environment.
Victim Empowerment Unit often include a victim-friendly room – a private, calm space within or attached to a police station where victims can:
* talk about what happened without being intimidated
* make their statements in privacy
* get immediate emotional support in a non-threatening setting. 

2. Emotional and Trauma Support
Volunteers in this unit help victims deal with shock, fear, anxiety and trauma right after the incident. They provide short-term counselling and help victims begin the healing process. 

3. Practical Assistance and Information
This unit give victims information about:
* the criminal justice process
* next steps after reporting a crime. 

4. Referrals to Professional Services
If victims need longer-term counselling, social support, or specialised care, the unit will connect them to proper professionals (social workers, psychologists, shelters, NGOs). 

5. Support for Specific Victims
Our unit is especially focused on helping vulnerable groups, including victims of:
-based violence and violence
offences and abuse
abuse and other crimes
