Conservationists, environmental scientists, and Earth guardians we lost in 2025

Each year, efforts to protect the planet lose people whose names rarely make headlines, but whose absence matters deeply. They were conservationists, scientists, rangers, Indigenous leaders, park managers, guides, and organizers. Some worked within institutions; others worked mostly on their own. What united them was a long-term commitment to protecting living systems under pressure.
Some of the people remembered here will be familiar. Many will not. That reflects how environmental work is often valued: visibility matters more than time spent, and recognition more than results. Yet much of what keeps ecosystems intact depends on people who quietly do unglamorous work for years—maintaining relationships, collecting data, resolving conflicts, training others, or simply staying when it would have been easier to leave. Their impact often becomes clear only when they are gone.
These obituaries try to record that kind of contribution. They do not aim to be complete or definitive. Instead, they show patterns that repeat across lives: an early connection to a place or species, followed by years of work in systems that were underfunded, politically constrained, or hostile. Progress was usually slow. Setbacks were common. Persistence mattered more than breakthroughs.
Many of those remembered here could have chosen safer or more comfortable paths. Most did not. That choice often came with real costs. Environmental work remains dangerous, stressful, and poorly supported. When people die—whether through violence, illness, accidents, or exhaustion—the loss extends beyond the individual. Experience, trust, and knowledge disappear with them.
These pieces are not meant to glorify or sentimentalize. They show how environmental protection actually happens: through people who struggled, doubted, failed, and kept going. Stewardship is not an abstract idea. It is a practice, carried out quietly, over time.
What follows is a record of lives spent protecting parts of the Earth that cannot speak for themselves—and a reminder that lasting change is usually built through endurance, not attention.
