CHEETAHS IN A FUNCTIONAL SYSTEM | We received so many questions about our cheetahs - after our recent cubs post - so we've decided to try and answer a few by sharing some more exciting information.

Gondwana’s cheetahs are the first free-roaming cheetahs in the Southern Cape and are thriving in a functional, natural system. The conservation importance of this is significant as cheetahs need to be able to negotiate and successfully live in competition with apex predators like lions to ensure the survival of their species.

The female cheetah, on Gondwana, was rescued after her mother had been taken by poachers. She is now raising her cubs successfully in the wild on our beautiful 11000Ha reserve. The more functional cheetah there are in the wild, the better the gene pool and the greater their chance of surviving extinction.

In 2022 it was estimated that there are less than 8000 cheetahs left in the wild. This marks an overall decline in the cheetah population of about 50% in the last 40 years. They are virtually on the brink of extinction! We are supportive of all conservation efforts to save this incredible feline and are excited to watch them grow and breed in the wild on Gondwana in our critically endangered Fynbos. We will be collecting data regarding their habitat, choice of food, and general habits while living in direct competition with other predators. This is valuable to our conservation ethos and our commitment to enlarging our territory and restoring biodiversity in the Southern Cape.

Together let's celebrate our Cheetah.

BIODIVERSITY RESTORATION | using Drones, Mapping and Spraying.

We are excited to share that the Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) has embarked on a sophisticated journey of biodiversity restoration using drone technology and GIS mapping! Drone mapping is assisting us to more efficiently monitor and target Invasive Alien Plants (IAP) on the reserve.

A FIRST FOR THE SOUTHERN CAPE! | Four beautiful cheetah cubs have been born on Gondwana Game Reserve.

An incredible first for Gondwana and our region in cheetah conservation.

Our cheetah are the first free-roaming cheetah in the Southern Cape thriving in a functional open system, in direct competition with other predators.

GCF'S SPIDER WOMAN | Jolandie Buck, Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) researcher and project co-ordinator, has made a significant contribution to documenting and identifying various different species with the GCF team.

Jolandie's passion for spiders has seen her contributing invaluable information and data on our arachnids to scientists around South Africa.

WORLD ELEPHANT DAY | Here at Gondwana, we have dedicated the last 20 years to re-wilding and restoring our beautiful 11 000 hectare private game reserve. We celebrate being home to the worlds southernmost free-roaming elephant herd who have calved the first wild-elephant calves born in the Southern Cape in the last one hundred and fifty years!

These spectacular, majestic mega-herbivores play a crucial role in the biodiversity within our Cape Floral Kingdom.

WORLD LION DAY | A magnificent apex predator recognised globally as Africa’s iconic megafauna.

Did you know that Lions are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN?

With only 2300 lions left in the wild in South Africa, we recognise the importance of protecting the lions of Gondwana and the magnificent Fynbos Floral kingdom they thrive in.

FASCINATING SNAKES | Gondwana's rich biodiversity across different biomes - Fynbos, Renosterveld, grassland and thicket habitats, is ideal to support life across all spectrums. Snakes form a vital part of our eco system as they regulate numbers of their different pray, thus maintaining the balance within the natural food chain.

Here are some of the species that Gondwana's Conservation Foundation (GCF) has observed in recent months 🐍

BLOOMING JULY | Gondwana's Fynbos is a gorgeous blooming tapestry of colour. Fynbos is arguably one of the most beautiful and biologically diverse biomes on earth, endemic to the Western Cape region, it exists nowhere else in the world. We celebrate our winter blooms in our Cape Floral World Heritage Site!

SOCIAL IMPACT | Over the last few years the Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF) has brought learners to Gondwana Game Reserve for environmental learning days.

In the last 5 years we have personally engaged with over 2000 primary school learners from our local community. The GCFs environmental education program focuses on teaching learners more about conservation and how they can implement conservation principals at home.

While the learners are on Gondwana, we have the opportunity to show them learners functioning life cycles in nature and At the same time, we teach them about the importance of conserving our precious Fynbos and wildlife. The GCF has collaborated with the local schools to ensure that the work we do with the learners on Gondwana supplements the Grade 6 & 7 Life Sciences school curriculum.

We also believe that our communities are the conservationists of the future, and we encourage the learners to explore the different work types on the reserve in the fields of conservation and hospitality in order to broaden their scope of opportunities in the future.
