Many firearm owners only realise their licence is close to expiry when time is already running out. In terms of Section 24(4) of the Fi****ms Control Act, renewal applications should be submitted at least 90 days before the expiry date reflected on your licence card. An expired licence can lead to unnecessary legal and administrative complications that could have been avoided with timely action.

Firearm Training Update: Breathing Room Until December

Some welcome news for firearm training providers and learners. SAQA has confirmed an extension of qualification 50480 for a further six months, now valid until 30 December 2026.

The PFTC's attorneys received word this morning following engagement with the legal representatives of SASSETA, the QCTO and SAQA. No reasons were given for the relatively short extension, but it removes the immediate threat of an enrolment interruption over the next six months.

There is more to come. SASSETA, the QCTO and SAQA expect the Minister of Higher Education and Training to make a further announcement on enrolment deadlines and to issue the required government gazette.

SAGA will keep members posted as the picture firms up.
