No cats are quite as comfortable in the treetops as leopards. Wedged in the fork of the boughs, legs and tail dangling (somewhat inelegantly), this leopard surveyed his landscape. Trees are critical for these cats — offering shelter during storms, a refuge to stash carcasses away from opportunistic scavengers, a place to safely snooze through the sweltering daylight hours, and sometimes even a vantage point from which to drop on unsuspecting prey. Leopards are among the most adaptable and resilient of cats, but even they have limits. Trees are an integral feature of the landscape they need to survive and if we destroy woodlands and forests, we put countless species at risk, including leopards.
