Press Statement for Immediate Release
18 October 2019
ANC Johnson Mayeki (Hout Bay) Branch condemns the Democratic Alliance's (DA) failure to govern in the interest of all Hout Bay residents.
The Hout Bay ANC Branch condemns the DA led City and Provincial Government failure to deliver in a manner that betters the lives of all who live in Hout Bay. The Branch further notes the absence of the DA Ward Councillor Roberto Quintas during this time of crisis for poorer working class Hout Bay citizens. To date, the DA has failed to deliver any change or meaningful action in relation to the current spate of taxi violence and the continued closure of the Hout Bay Day Hospital.
Taxi Violence:
October is Transport month and the DA led City of Cape Town is failing to address the ongoing and escalating taxi violence that has been taking place in Hout Bay. The ANC Hout Bay Branch condemns the DA led City of Cape Town's failure to address the dispute regarding proper permits which has ultimately resulted in the ongoing taxi violence. Concrete bollards erected along Main rd will not solve the taxi problem - they have just pushed the problem out of sight.
The Branch further condemns the lack of appropriate delivery with regards to the MyCiti Buses on the Hout Bay to Cape Town routes and finds it to be exploitative of lower income workers. Put simply, there are not enough buses available on the Hout Bay routes and peak time travel costs are unnecessarily expensive for low income workers.
The Branch demands that the City of Cape Town now actively manages the licensed taxi operators in our area and rapidly issues proper permits for Taxi's to operate on the Hout Bay Cape Town route to avoid any further violence or loss of income from Hout Bay residents.
Closure of Hout Bay Day Hospital:
The Hout Bay ANC Branch strongly condemns the Western Cape Government recent decision to close the Hout Bay Day Hospital, this decision is a gross violation of the basic healthcare rights of the entire community of Hout Bay's residents, but especially poor working class citizens, the vulnerable and elderly.
The ANC Hout Bay Branch calls on the MEC of Health in the Western Cape to urgently re-open the Hout Bay day hospital. The current Provisional Plan that the Western Cape Department of Health has decided to implement continues to violate our rights to Health Care, Privacy, Dignity and Life.
The Hout Bay ANC Branch also calls on the South African Human Rights Commission Western Cape Office to urgently deal with the complaint lodged in relation to the closure of the day hospital. Hout Bay residents lives are currently being put at risk by the closure of the day hospital and both the DA and Ward Councillor Roberto Quintas will be held responsible should there be any loss of life accordingly.
