Truck Catches Fire on N3

Midlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to the N3 between Midmar and Merrivale following reports of a truck that had caught fire.

On arrival at the scene, paramedics found the truck well alight, with flames and smoke coming from the vehicle. The fire department was already responding and firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported at the scene.

Authorities were in attendance and the incident was managed accordingly. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

Grenades Found in Midmar Dam

Midlands EMS Howick K9 Team, together with Midlands EMS crews, were dispatched to Midmar Dam following reports of what was believed to be grenades that had been discovered in the water.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Midlands EMS Howick K9 Team assessed the situation and established that the items located in the dam were smoke grenades.

SAPS Howick members were in attendance, together with SAPS Search and Rescue personnel and the SAPS Explosives Unit. The relevant units conducted an assessment of the items that had been located and attended to the scene.

The smoke grenades, together with ammunition that was also located at the scene, were safely secured and removed by the SAPS Explosives Unit for further investigation and appropriate handling.

No further details regarding the origin of the items are available at this stage. The matter has been handed over to the South African Police Service and remains under investigation.

Midlands EMS would like to remind members of the public that if any suspected explosive devices, ammunition, or other dangerous items are discovered, they should not be touched, moved, or handled. The appropriate authorities should be contacted immediately.

Patient sustains serious leg injuries after fall in snow

Mildlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to the Impendle area after receiving a call regarding a patient who had sustained serious leg injuries following a fall in the snow.

The ambulance crew faced challenging conditions while responding to the incident, with roads in the area becoming slippery and sections of the route covered in snow. Despite the difficult driving conditions, the crew continued their response and made their way safely into the area to locate the patient.

On arrival, the patient was found and assessed by the EMS crew. The patient's injuries were treated and the patient was stabilized on scene before being carefully loaded into the ambulance for transport.

The patient was subsequently transported to a Level 1 trauma hospital for further assessment, treatment and management of their injuries.

Incidents in snow-covered and icy conditions can present significant challenges for emergency crews, not only due to the injuries sustained but also because of difficult road and access conditions.

Single vehicle accident leaves 2 dead.

Midlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to the R617, just past Mphophomeni, for a reported motor vehicle accident.

On arrival at the scene, emergency services found that a single vehicle had been involved in the accident. Two occupants had been ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Unfortunately, both patients had sustained severe injuries and showed no signs of life. They were assessed by emergency medical personnel and were declared deceased on the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the accident are not known at this stage and will be investigated by the relevant authorities.

Authorities were in attendance and the necessary procedures were initiated at the scene.

Emergency services also noted signs of sleet and snow in the area at the time of the incident, with the weather conditions contributing to reduced visibility and potentially slippery road surfaces.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling in wet, icy, or snowy conditions. Roads can become extremely slippery, especially in areas experiencing sleet or snowfall. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, increase their following distance, ensure their headlights are switched on, and avoid sudden braking or harsh steering movements.

We would like to urge all members of the public to take extra precautions when travelling during adverse weather conditions and to allow themselves additional time to reach their destinations safely.

Patient collapses in restaurant.

Midlands EMS Howick crews were dispatched to a restaurant in Howick following reports of a patient who had collapsed and was in need of urgent medical assistance.

On arrival at the scene, crews immediately assessed the patient and found them to be in a critical condition. Paramedics promptly initiated CPR and began advanced life support treatment in an effort to resuscitate the patient.

Advanced medical interventions were carried out by the paramedics, with medication administered as required. A manual defibrillator was utilised, and the patient was shocked several times in an attempt to restore a normal heart rhythm.

A manual ventilator was also attached to assist with the patient’s breathing and oxygenation while paramedics continued with aggressive resuscitation efforts.

The Midlands EMS crews worked together continuously on scene, carrying out coordinated CPR, administering medication and providing advanced life support treatment.

After continued resuscitation efforts, including multiple defibrillation attempts, the patient was successfully resuscitated by the paramedics on scene.

The patient was stabilised as far as possible before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical assessment and treatment.

The receiving hospital was contacted and made aware of the patient’s condition, allowing the medical team to prepare for the patient’s arrival.

The patient was handed over to hospital staff for further advanced medical care and monitoring.

The quick response and coordinated efforts of the Midlands EMS crews played a vital role in successfully resuscitating the patient.

Single vehicle accident leaves 3 fighting for their lives.

Midlands EMS crews were dispatched to the R622 in Mooi River for a serious motor vehicle accident.

On arrival at the scene, emergency crews found that a single vehicle had been involved in the accident, with 3 occupants sustaining critical injuries.

It is believed that the passengers had been travelling in the back of the bakkie when the vehicle was involved in the accident, resulting in them being ejected from the vehicle.

All 3 patients were assessed by paramedics and found to be in a critical condition, requiring urgent advanced life support treatment at the scene.

Due to the severity of their injuries, advanced life support interventions were carried out before the patients were transported to hospital for further medical care.

1 patient was placed on a manual ventilator and required assisted ventilation while being transported to hospital.

All 3 patients were treated extensively on scene before being transported to hospital under the care of emergency medical personnel.

The exact circumstances leading up to the accident are unknown at this stage.

Authorities were in attendance and will investigate the incident further.
