This family group are walking the Sandveld route this week. Their third night is at Klein Tafelberg, one stop before the little town of Redelinghuys.
This route is off the beaten track, magnificent in wildflower season (now), offers vast open spaces with interesting rock features and rooibos plantations.

This lovely young couple from Canada are setting off this morning for their first day of a 16 day Camino.
They’ve chosen a Camino Lite option and have arranged all their own meals, chaperones where necessary, transport, and are carrying their own bags.
Our team has booked them in with all accommodation hosts and provided a directory of where to eat and who to contact.

Pilgrim story from recent beginners route:

“We ended up finishing our walks pretty early most afternoons, so we ended up drinking more wine than we expected. We started calling it the "Cavino" instead of the Camino!

On a more personal note, I was genuinely surprised by how spiritual the experience turned out to be. The people we met and the interactions we had along the way really moved something in me.

For future pilgrims taking Route 1, my recommendation would be to bring card games or a good book to keep you occupied during the downtime.”

It’s happening.

We’ve partnered with Cape E-Bike and, together, we’ve designed our very first Cape Camino e-bike route. And the first pilgrims are riding it right now.

We’ve started the journey deep into the Sandveld, far from the usual tourist places, and designed a route that brings together everything we love about Cape Camino: journey, connection, landscapes, diverse hosts, South African hospitality you can’t manufacture.

The logistics have been carefully thought through. Accommodation, routes, hosts, support vehicles, charging ports, and daily details are all connected.

Along the way, riders are sharing meals, meeting local communities, discovering unexpected areas, experiencing South Africa not as spectators, but from within it.

Our first Cape Camino e-bike route is on the ground now.

What did a typical day on Camino Lite actually look like?

For me, the logistics were part of the adventure.

Before setting off, I’d provision my walking food for the day, make sure I had enough water, and check the route and where I’d be stopping. And of course pack up my overnight bag neatly and tightly in my backpack.

I’d research ahead of time to make sure there was somewhere I could eat when I arrived — so I knew that after a full day of walking, there’d be a proper meal waiting for me.

Then I’d carry my bag, walk, eat, drink, navigate and figure things out as I went.

Maggie is one of our hosts and the chaperone for the Community Walk. She’ll welcome you,
walk beside you or leave you be, point you in the right direction, and probably make sure you’ve eaten something.

But she’s also a pilgrim.

And that’s the thing about Cape Camino: the roles blur. Hosts become walking companions. Chaperones become friends. Strangers become the people you stop for on the way.

You don’t need the right gear, the biggest hiking history, or a group of friends who already know the way.

Just bring yourself.

Did you know?

The Elands Bay Cave’s ancient rock writing includes a "graffiti wall" of over 200 tiny handprints, and almost all of them belong to children under the age of ten.

This cave is found on Route 4 of Cape Camino.
