DOD Archives The DOD Archives is the official repository for archived records of the Department of Defence dating from 1912.

For more detail on information services provided by the DOD Archive see the Services tab. The DOD’s archival records are made available in accordance with the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) (Act No 2 of 2000). The following records that are automatically available can be accessed at the DOD Archives without having to follow the PAIA process:
• Personnel records of military veterans

that completed service before and up to and including 31 December 1969.
• Personnel records requested by a requester about him/herself.
• Records relating to the Union Defence Force (UDF) and South African Defence Force (SADF) and other statutory forces created up to 31 December 1978;
• Records classified Restricted created up to and including 31 December 1998.
• Historic photographs until the 31 December 1978. The automatically available operational records include information on South Africa’s involvement in World War I (1914-1918), World War II (1939-1945), the Korean War (1950-1953), as well as military activities until 31 December 1978.
