HARRY GWALA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY COMMEMORATES YOUTH MONTH THROUGH EMPOWERMENT AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES.
The Harry Gwala District Municipality successfully hosted a Youth Commemoration Event at Soweto Hall in Morningside, under the jurisdiction of the Johannes Phumani Phungula Local Municipality, reaffirming its commitment to youth empowerment and development during Youth Month today on 12 June 2026.
The event was attended by His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Z.D. Nxumalo; Chief Whip Cllr N. Mhatu; Cllr Msomi; members of the Youth Council; the District Youth Coordinator; representatives from Kwenza’s Driving Academy; municipal officials; and young people from across the district.
The programme commenced with welcoming remarks from Cllr Msomi, who congratulated the youth and encouraged them to seize opportunities that will contribute to their personal growth and future success.
Delivering the purpose of the day, Chief Whip Cllr N. Mhatu reflected on the significance of Youth Month and the enduring legacy of the youth who sacrificed their lives during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. She encouraged young people to take responsibility for their future through education, skills development, and active participation in programmes designed to uplift and empower them. She further emphasized the municipality’s commitment to ensuring that opportunities are inclusive and accessible to all young people, including persons with disabilities.
Delivering the keynote address, His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Z.D. Nxumalo, encouraged young people to exercise their democratic right to vote and play an active role in shaping the future of their communities. He highlighted the various youth development programmes implemented by the municipality and urged beneficiaries to make full use of the opportunities available to them. The Mayor further stressed that education, skills development, and self-discipline remain essential building blocks for a brighter future.
A key highlight of the event was the awarding of Cyber Security Certificates to young beneficiaries who successfully completed the programme. Selected participants were also introduced to a Driver’s Licence Training Programme aimed at enhancing their employability and economic opportunities.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Umzimkhulu Youth Chairperson Ms Thozama Peter expressed gratitude to the Harry Gwala District Municipality for its continued commitment to youth development and called for sustained efforts to create more opportunities for young people across the district.
The event concluded on a positive note, reflecting the municipality’s ongoing commitment to transforming lives, empowering young people, and ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of social and economic development.
