Services SETA Our primary function is to facilitate skills development by establishing learning programmes.

Our primary function is to facilitate skills development by establishing learning programmes such as learnerships, skills programmes, internships and other strategic learning initiatives. This is done through the disbursement of grants to employers and training providers. We are also tasked with monitoring the quality of occupation-based training within the services sector scope as delegated by th

e Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). There are millions of South Africans, young and old, who need to learn new skills. Some are already in employment and need to improve their skills and to learn new ones so they can play a meaningful role in South Africa’s economy. The services sector, one of the economic sectors of the economy, contributes over a quarter of the GDP and employs over 3 million people. To maintain and growth the strength of this sector, the industry needs to employ competent and skilled labour force. The Services SETA bridges the gap between the formal education and training system and the workplace by facilitating and funding learning programmes that build skills-set required by industries (the world of work). To achieve this, the Services SETA works in partnership with public and private learning institutions accredited to deliver the training on its behalf.

Expanding learners’ horizons beyond traditional career paths

Services SETA and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) continued their learner engagements in Mbombela on 4 September 2026, reaching Grade 11 and 12 learners at Lihawu Secondary School and E.J. Singwana Secondary School with information to help them make informed choices about life after matric.

The engagement covered NSFAS funding, the application process, fraud awareness and post-school opportunities.

During the engagement, NSFAS Risk Specialist Vuyani Daweti urged learners to provide accurate information when applying for funding, protect their application credentials and remain cautious of individuals who promise to secure NSFAS funding in exchange for payment.

NSFAS beneficiaries Lulama Sithole, a TUT student, and LLB graduate Noxolo Masinga shared their experiences, encouraging learners to take their studies seriously and maintain strong academic performance.

“It’s not about where you come from, it is about where you are going,” said Services SETA’s George Matlala, highlighting the growing importance of occupational skills in preparing young people for the world of work.

The engagement encouraged learners to consider TVET colleges and occupational skills as options for further education and the world of work.

Services SETA, in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Education has concluded its week long Career Awareness Campaign in the Nkangala District, reaching about 2,323 Grade 9 learners across 10 schools in rural areas.

The campaign exposed learners to diverse career opportunities and post school pathways, including TVET Colleges, universities, learnerships and bursaries, while encouraging informed subject choices for Grade 10 and beyond.

Reflecting on the campaign, Mr Tebogo Thage from the Mpumalanga Department of Education said “The programme successfully achieved its objective of bringing career guidance closer to learners at grassroots level”.

Ms Yvonne Thumbathi, a teacher at Phumelela Secondary School, said “It is very important that you do these initiatives because our learners are not really exposed to these careers. They need to know about them and see that there are other careers besides working at the mine or just going to Shoprite immediately after school”.

Honestly Mthimkhulu a learner from Middelburg Combined School said “I’ve learned that I can be anything I want. I just need to choose my subjects wisely, and I can achieve my goals.”

The campaign highlighted the importance of bringing career guidance and opportunities closer to learners in rural communities.

Empowering learners with information for their next step

Services SETA joined the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for an awareness campaign at Kutsalani Secondary School in KaBokweni, Mbombela, Mpumalanga, today, 3 September 2026.

Through presentations and direct engagement, Grade 11 and 12 learners were equipped with information on post-school opportunities, financial aid and skills development. The campaign also helped learners understand the NSFAS application process while raising awareness about fraud, misinformation and exploitation.

During a presentation on risk management, NSFAS Risk Specialist Vuyani Daweti warned learners against submitting duplicate documents, providing falsified information or using another person’s details, noting that such practices could expose applicants to fraud.

Learners were also encouraged to actively seek opportunities, use digital platforms effectively and consider occupational and artisanal career paths.

“The resources are at your fingertips. Please make sure that you use them. It’s not going to be easy. Your background might not be easy, but definitely, it is a challenge you can overcome. You can make it,” Services SETA’s Lebogang Kotsi concluded.

Services SETA, in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Education, continued its career guidance engagements in the Nkangala District, reaching Grade 9 learners at Bankfontein Combined School, Steve Tshwete Boarding School, and Mkhulu Combined School.

The engagements focused on helping learners make informed decisions about their subjects and future careers, while introducing them to the different education and career pathways available through colleges, universities, and SETAs.

For Londi Maseko, a Grade 9 learner from Steve Tshwete Boarding School, said she learned about the opportunities available through colleges, universities, and SETAs, including support that can assist learners with their education and training.

She also highlighted that she learned the importance of researching career options and choosing subjects based on personal interests rather than following friends. Londi hopes to pursue a career in Nursing.

Services SETA Administrator, Mr Lehlogonolo Masoga, congratulated the 200 learners enrolled in the programme. He said the programme attracted 5,795 applications from young people across 17 municipalities in the province. “That level of interest is clear evidence that there is a strong appetite among young people to enter the property sector,” he said.

“It also reminds us that the need for opportunities is much greater than the number of places currently available,” he added.

Mr Masoga further highlighted that Services SETA has invested R300 million in the rollout of the Real Estate Learnership Programme, with more provinces still expected to launch. He also confirmed that the Mpumalanga beneficiaries will obtain an NQF Level 4 qualification in Real Estate.

In her keynote address, Minister of Human Settlements Thembi Simelane said the Mpumalanga Real Estate Learnership Programme seeks to promote inclusive economic participation and transformation within the real estate sector.

She said the programme will equip participants with the training and skills needed to operate effectively in the property sector, while creating opportunities for young people to establish themselves in the industry.

Addressing the beneficiaries directly, Minister Simelane urged them to embrace the opportunity and make the most of the platform available to them. “Use this opportunity. Be hungry for success, so that you become a reference point for the next generation of property practitioners,” she concluded.

Services SETA, in partnership with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government and the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA), earlier today launched the Mpumalanga Real Estate Learnership Programme in Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

The 12-month learnership programme will benefit 200 learners across the province, providing them with theoretical and practical training in the real estate industry, as well as a monthly stipend.

The programme forms part of a broader initiative to create opportunities for young people in the real estate sector, with the model set to extend beyond Mpumalanga as other provinces prepare to launch similar programmes.

The programme builds on a similar model first piloted in KwaZulu-Natal in 2024, which saw 537 learners graduate in March 2026.

Services SETA supported Day 2 of the weeklong career exhibition in Mpumalanga at the Nkangala District, visiting Alex Benjamin Secondary School and Kwazamokuhle Secondary School.

The team engaged Grade 9 learners on career choices, subject selection, skills development and opportunities available to help them prepare for their careers.

Speaking to the learners, Phindile Sibeko from Services SETA said grade 9 is an important stage where learners need guidance on career choices and subject selection.

Grade 9 learner, Nonkululeko Hlatshwayo from Alex Benjamin Secondary school appreciated the guidance given through the career exhibition saying, she now understands that opportunities extend beyond university. “TVET colleges are also institutions where dreams can be achieved. I want to pursue a career in robotics, coding and any Science related career,” she said.

Inspiring Futures Through Reading and Skills Development

Services SETA partners with the RedBookshelf Foundation, Durban University of Technology, Nedbank, Mangosuthu University of Technology, Icebolethu Group Foundation and Berea Group of Colleges for a day focused on reading, career guidance and personal development.

Held at Esidadeni, KwaZulu-Natal, the initiative reaches 450 high school learners from the Mkhambathini Area, highlighting how reading can support academic success, broaden perspectives and inspire personal growth.

The engagement also encourages learners to explore career opportunities and make informed decisions about their education and skills development journey.

Leading this edition is the national launch of To The Power Of X², an internship programme that will provide 20,000 unemployed graduates with structured workplace experience over two years.

The edition also features Services SETA’s bursary activations at public TVET colleges, oversight engagements at Lovedale TVET College, workplace-based learning initiatives and stories celebrating leadership during Women’s Month.
