More than 500 young people attended the EMS outreach programme at Soweto Jabulani SafeHub, where participants were educated on safety awareness, emergency preparedness and immediate response measures.

The Public Safety Department in 2024, appointed new fire chief Andries Mucavele. Mucavele
stepped into the role of Chief of Emergency Management Service (EMS) in the City of
Johannesburg with a passion for fire safety and commitment to community service. With more
than 23 years of experience Chief Mucavele brought to the department fresh perspectives on
the department. His priorities include implementing a proactive approach, tackling the shortage

THE CITY OF JOBURG’S PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT MMC MOSHE KOMA WORKING
FOR THE PEOPLE OF JOHANNESBURG TO RECLAIM THE CITY.

Johannesburg is a city of immense opportunity, resilience and potential. Yet for many years,
residents have witnessed challenges ranging from crime and lawlessness to abandoned
buildings, illegal land occupations, reckless driving, bylaw violations and deteriorating public
spaces. Reclaiming South Africa’s economic hub requires a determined and coordinated effort,

PUBLIC SAFETY MMC MOSHE KOMA URGES RESIDENTS TO PREPARE FOR SEVERE COLD WEATHER
AND POSSIBLE SNOWFALL.

The City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety MMC is urging residents to take necessary
precautions as very cold weather conditions are expected across Johannesburg and parts of
Gauteng, with the possibility of snowfall in some areas as the weather system develops. The
forecast points to a significant drop in temperatures, accompanied by cloudy conditions, rain
and showers. While the possibility of snowfall cannot be ruled out in elevated areas, residents
are urged to rely on official updates from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) as
conditions may change.

The MMC for Public Safety, Councillor Moshe Koma, today visited the MTN Taxi Rank to engage directly
with taxi operators on safety, law enforcement, by-law compliance and service delivery challenges
affecting the rank and its surrounding areas. The engagement provided an opportunity for the MMC to
hear directly from taxi operators about the challenges they experience while operating at the rank and
transporting commuters across Johannesburg.
Key concerns raised included criminal activity in and around the taxi rank, compliance with City by-laws,
the illegal washing of taxis on public roads, informal trading adjacent to the rank, alleged drug dealing,
and the general cleanliness and management of the surrounding environment. Taxi operators also raised
concerns regarding ongoing electricity outages, which have resulted in inadequate lighting around the
rank. They highlighted that poorly lit areas create opportunities for criminal activity and
