Illegal mining is tearing through Gauteng’s infrastructure and leaving residents in fear.
Whole stretches of road in Johannesburg have collapsed. Wemmer Pan Road is cracked and sinking. Homes shake from underground blasting. City Power says substations, transformers and pylons are at risk as excavations undermine the ground.
Michael Sun MPL, DA Spokesperson for Community Safety, put it plainly: illegal miners steal electricity cables, damage water pipes and dig up roads.
“Who gets to suffer? The residents get to suffer.”
This is no longer only a mining problem. It is a public safety, infrastructure and crime crisis. Shootouts, gang control and collapsing ground are becoming part of daily life in parts of Joburg, Roodepoort and Carletonville.
Gauteng needs visible enforcement, secured abandoned shafts, and a province that treats illegal mining as the organised-crime emergency it is.

Latest crime stats expose Gauteng’s failure to curb serious violent crime.
SAPS first-quarter crime statistics for 2026/27 show Gauteng remains the country’s biggest contributor to kidnapping and several other serious crimes.
The province accounts for:

51% of all kidnapping cases nationally
25.5% of attempted murders
20.4% of assault GBH
23.5% of murders

Attempted murders rose from 1 720 to 1 772. Drug-related crime increased by 8.7%. R**e cases at educational institutions jumped 61.5% from one quarter to the next.
More than half of Gauteng’s 1 276 murders were committed with fi****ms. Eleven of the 30 police stations with the highest contact-crime levels are in this province.
Residents cannot keep living in fear while the same strategies deliver the same results. Police stations must be properly staffed, equipped and resourced so officers can investigate, arrest and secure convictions.

R197.4 million procurement scandal grounds Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing.
Premier Lesufi launched the Airwing in April 2024 to give police an aerial advantage against crime. Less than two years later it is grounded after a major procurement failure.
A written reply reveals the R197.4 million helicopter contract breached the PFMA, Treasury Regulations and the national transversal contract. Taxpayers had already paid R156.4 million before the contract was terminated and referred to the SIU.
Four officials are implicated. More than six months later, not one has been suspended or faced a disciplinary hearing. They remain in their posts on full pay.
Meanwhile the province is relying on 12 borrowed helicopters — at a cost still undisclosed to the public.
The DA is demanding suspensions, full transparency on the borrowed fleet costs, and proper accountability.

282 service delivery protests in Gauteng reflect Lesufi’s failure to deliver.
Over five financial years, Gauteng recorded 282 major service delivery protests. Of these, 82 took place in the 2025/2026 financial year alone.
Electricity accounted for nearly half of all protests (47.9%), followed by water (25.9%). Residents are also protesting over sanitation, housing, roads, refuse removal and poor governance.
While communities take to the streets, municipalities remain under severe financial pressure — with some, like Ekurhuleni, owing creditors billions and others unable to fix basic infrastructure such as sewage systems.
Empty promises will not restore dignity or service delivery. Residents deserve a government that plans, maintains and delivers.

Four arrests. One office. At this point, the EMPD Deputy Chief is collecting arrests like performance reviews.

Ekurhuleni deserves law enforcement that upholds the law, not leadership that keeps making headlines for the wrong reasons.

Enough is enough.

At least 45% of officers at Rabasotho Police Station have expired fi***rm competency certificates.
New coverage confirms what the DA exposed: 130 of the 281 operational members at Tembisa’s Rabasotho Police Station are working with expired fi***rm competency certificates. A further 92 still require mandatory operational training.
This is a high-crime station dealing with serious contact crimes, including robbery, carjacking and kidnapping.
Police officers make life-and-death decisions under extreme pressure. Regular competency assessments and proper training are non-negotiable for their safety and the safety of the community.
The DA will continue to push for urgent renewals and the completion of outstanding training.

DA seeks justice as another woman is murdered at the start of Women’s Month.
A young traffic warden from Eersterust, Pretoria, was allegedly stabbed to death by her partner on Saturday evening — the start of Women’s Month.
Even more devastating are allegations that a previous gender-based violence case had been opened but never finalised. If confirmed, this would represent a fatal failure by the system that was meant to protect her.
The DA picketed outside the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court this morning against the suspect’s bail application.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Taymin Platt.
Every woman has the right to live free from fear. Every victim deserves justice.
