FNB ART PRIZE EXHIBITION: Thato Toeba, winner of the 2025 FNB Art Prize, takes centre stage at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, and you’re invited to experience this milestone in the heart of Joburg.

As part of Arts Alive Joburg’s commitment to connecting audiences with the city’s arts, culture and heritage, the Johannesburg Art Gallery welcomes Toeba for a solo exhibition presented by FNB Art Joburg and Stevenson.

Born in Maseru, Lesotho, Toeba is an artist, lawyer and social sciences researcher whose practice uses mixed-media photomontage and assemblage to interrogate identity, power and history. Their 2025 FNB Art Prize win is particularly significant: Toeba became the first artist from Lesotho to receive the prize.

The FNB Art Prize has grown into an important platform for contemporary African artistic voices, with the winning artist receiving the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at JAG, placing significant contemporary practice inside one of Johannesburg’s major public cultural institutions.

For Arts Alive Joburg, moments like this are about bringing artists, audiences, institutions and major cultural platforms together. Creating greater public access to the arts, celebrating African creative excellence and strengthening Johannesburg’s position as a city where African art and ideas can be seen, experienced and celebrated.

Join us as we celebrate Thato Toeba. You are invited to experience the exhibition with us.

HERITAGE ON THE WALLS OF ELDORADO PARK | ARTS ALIVE JOBURG 2026

The Go Clean Go Green Public Art Walkway is transforming public space in Eldorado Park through a vibrant corridor of murals. What was once a wasteland has been reclaimed and reimagined through art, creating a space for community, creativity and cultural expression.

As part of Arts Alive Joburg, the walkway has been expanded with a prominent Khoi-San themed installation, bringing heritage and cultural storytelling into the everyday landscape of the community.

The historically informed and culturally sensitive artworks create greater visibility for Khoi-San heritage while giving residents and visitors an opportunity to engage with these stories through public art.

The expansion also supports a bigger vision: increasing visitor engagement, encouraging cultural tourism, creating opportunities for local artists and creative practitioners, stimulating local economic activity and strengthening community pride and ownership of the space.

👑 THE CROWN WAS UP FOR GRABS, AND THE JOKES CAME LOADED! 😂🔥

On 29 August, the John Kani Theatre at The Market Theatre was filled with laughter, fierce competition and unforgettable moments as Arts Alive Joburg partnered with Crowned: Comedy Shutdown for a night of comedy and celebration.

Hosted by Celeste Ntuli & PelePele Mchunue, with David Kau and Gumbi as judges and DJ Fif Laa setting the mood with a vibrant opening set, 16 comedians went head-to-head with just 5 minutes each to prove they had what it takes.

The competition was tough, but Nqobile Mahlangu came out on top, taking home the R20,000 first prize! 🏆👑

The night also celebrated Celeste Ntuli's birthday, with the audience joining in to sing Happy Birthday 🎂, while Smowkey Nyembe surprised us with a taste of his upcoming show on 19 September at Soweto Theatre. 🔥

Adding to the event was a feature of the Doek” Challenge, honouring women during Women’s Month, with a prize from Crowned: Comedy Shutdown’s partners. 👑💜

Aiden Ho gave us a comedy mashup of East and South. Drawing from Chinese “Xiang Sheng,” South African sarcasm, and a life split across continents, Aiden’s sets mix sharp wordplay, oddball insights, and that one accent you didn’t see coming.

🤣 Rae du Plooy wasted no time using his look as the ultimate icebreaker at The Comedy Shutdown. Just in case you’ve ever mistaken him for a le***an. The Market Theatre was in absolute stitches.

The Tsonga agenda has officially been addressed! 😭 Keketso Hutamo stepped onto the stage at The Comedy Shutdown for the crown.
