INCIDENT ALERT: Plane Crash & Secondary Motor Vehicle Accident – Glen Austin, Midrand

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) hereby alerts motorists of a major incident at the intersection of New Road and Old Pretoria Main Road (R101) in Glen Austin, Midrand.

Emergency Management Services (EMS) are actively on scene responding to a reported plane crash. Following the initial crash, a secondary motor vehicle accident occurred at the same location, resulting in severe traffic disruptions and heavy delays on the roadway.

JMPD officers are currently en route to assist with traffic control, scene management, and diversions.

At this stage, authorities have not confirmed the number of injuries or casualties resulting from either incident. Details will be provided as further verified information becomes available.

Motorists are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid the immediate area, and ensure all access routes remain open for incoming emergency response units. Please utilise the following alternative routes:

• N1 Highway: Use the N1 via Allandale Road or Olifantsfontein Road (M38) interchanges to bypass the New Road / R101 intersection.

• Arterial Diversions: Route via Olifantsfontein Road (northbound) or Allandale Road (southbound) to bypass the Glen Austin perimeter.

• Local Midrand Traffic: Use Lever Road or Dale Road to travel through the area without approaching the affected intersection.

Operations officers were conducting foot patrols along Commissioner & Von Brandis Streets in Johannesburg when a member of the public approached them for assistance regarding a Daihatsu Charade that had been parked unattended in the area for approximately four weeks.

The officers conducted a verification on eNaTIS which confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The vehicle was booked in at Aeroton SAPS Pound for further investigation.

👏 commends the vigilant member of the public for promptly reporting the suspicious vehicle. Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant & report suspicious activities to the police. Together, we can make our communities safer.

Pavements are public spaces intended for pedestrians not for operating restaurants, food outlets or other businesses without the required authorisation.

is reminding businesses & informal traders that City of Johannesburg by-laws regulate trading & the use of public spaces. Operating a business on a pavement without the necessary permit or authorisation is unlawful & may result in enforcement action & the impoundment of goods or equipment, in accordance with applicable by-laws.

Businesses must operate from lawful premises & traders must comply with the applicable municipal requirements.

K9 officers received information from VumaCam regarding a stolen white Toyota Quantum. Officers immediately responded & searched the area. The vehicle was spotted parked at the intersection of Lillian Ngoyi & Henry Nxumalo Streets in Johannesburg.

The officers conducted a vehicle verification, which confirmed that the Quantum had been reported stolen. The vehicle was recovered & taken to the Aeroton SAPS pound for safekeeping and further investigation.

continues to reclaim & restore public spaces for the benefit of all residents. Illegal structures & displaced persons were removed from Pieter Roos Park in Parktown as part of ongoing operations to protect & maintain public open spaces.

Johannesburg’s parks are intended for leisure, recreation, relaxation & community enjoyment. No person may unlawfully occupy public park land or erect an illegal structure on it.

JMPD will continue working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that public spaces remain accessible, safe & welcoming for everyone.

LOCALIZED FLOODING AND TRAPPED VEHICLES AT SIEMERT ROAD & CURRY STREET, DOORNFONTEIN, JOHANNESBURG

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) advises all motorists to exercise extreme caution across the City due to persistent heavy rainfall, wet road surfaces, and severe localised flooding.

Currently, localised flooding has been reported at Siemert Road and Currey Street, Doornfontein. Multiple vehicles have become submerged and stuck in high water at this location.

JMPD officers are on-scene managing traffic flow, assisting stranded motorists, and actively diverting vehicles away from the flooded road.

Motorists heading toward these locations are being diverted onto alternative routes. Avoid the area entirely where possible.

If you encounter submerged roads or high standing water, turn around immediately. Stalled vehicles block emergency response access and present severe safety hazards.

Drive well below the speed limit, maintain an extended following distance, and keep the headlights switched on.

Follow all temporary barricades, road closures, and instructions from JMPD officers directing traffic on site.

Road users who encounter stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions, or rising water levels are urged to report them straight away to the City of Johannesburg's Emergency Call Centre: 011 375 5911

ROAD OBSTRUCTIONS DUE TO FALLEN TREES ACROSS JOHANNESBURG

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) urges all motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution on the roads today due to adverse weather conditions and high winds affecting various parts of the city.
The severe weather has caused waterlogged soil and uprooted trees, leading to multiple road obstructions and hazardous driving conditions across Johannesburg.

Currently, Cooper and Beryl Street in Cyrildene, near Athlone Girls' High School, are blocked due to a large tree that has fallen across the roadway, completely obstructing traffic flow.

Fallen trees and storm debris have caused significant traffic disruptions across several key routes.

Intersections at Church Street and 14th Avenue in Mayfair, as well as Beatrice Street and Princes Avenue in Windsor, are currently obstructed, with motorists advised to reroute via nearby side streets like Central Road, Bird Street, Countesses Avenue, or R***e Range Road.

In Witpoortjie, a severe incident occurred at Glen William Street and Hendrik Boom Street, where a large tree fell onto a JMPD vehicle; the road is completely closed while emergency crews respond, and traffic is being diverted to Generaal Pienaar Avenue or Prospect Street.

Highway access is also impacted, as debris is obstructing the Smit Street M1 on-ramp in Braamfontein and a fallen tree is blocking the M1 11th Avenue off-ramp near Houghton, causing back-ups onto the main carriageway. Drivers heading to the M1 should consider using alternative ramps such as Carr Street, Empire Road, Glenhove Road, or Riviera Road.

Emergency response teams, alongside Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ), have been dispatched to clear the debris. JMPD Officers are on-site to assist with traffic diversion.

Wet roads significantly increase stopping distances. Maintain a safe gap from the vehicle ahead. Ensure your headlights are switched on to improve visibility in heavy rain. Be alert for fallen branches, loose power lines, and pooling water, especially near heavily treed residential areas. Avoid low-lying bridges or roads with running water. Turn around and seek an alternative route.

Grant right of way to first responders, JMPD units, and maintenance crews attending to incidents.
