Youth Month is not only about remembering the youth of 1976. It is also about confronting the struggles young people continue to face today.

What does it mean to belong in a society where identity is often judged before it is understood?

In celebration of Youth Month, Dr Janell Le Roux, Senior Lecturer in Strategic Communication at University of Johannesburg, reflects on identity, recognition and the burden of being “in-between”, inviting us to think more deeply about how young people experience belonging, exclusion and dignity in everyday spaces.

As the NIHSS marks Youth Month 2026, we cover scholarship that speaks to the lived realities of young people and the society we are called to imagine.

How do we ensure that South Africa's liberation history remains meaningful to a new generation?

Supported by the NIHSS in partnership with Freedom Park and African Revolutionary Internationalist, the initiative seeks to reconnect young people with the histories, voices, and struggles that shaped our democracy.

Africa cannot meaningfully shape its future while disconnected from its histories, languages, memory, creativity, and systems of knowledge.

On Africa Day, we are reminded that the continent’s transformation will not come from economics and policy alone, but also from the power of ideas, critical thought, cultural identity, ethical leadership, and socially responsive scholarship.

The humanities and social sciences remain essential in helping societies understand themselves, confront inequality, preserve memory, strengthen social cohesion, and imagine futures rooted in African realities.

As the NIHSS, we continue to support knowledge production that speaks to the continent, its people, and its evolving place in the world. Today, we celebrate an Africa that continues to think boldly, create fearlessly, remember truthfully, and lead on its own terms.
