The Gauteng Economic Development Agency (GEDA) and Blue IQ Investment Holdings have merged to form the Gauteng Growth & Development Agency. Over the past month, we have introduced women helping to build Gauteng’s economy, from crochet artists and jewellery designers to industrial manufacturers and creative industry leaders.

We have shared stories of:

Beads that tell stories of African creativity.

Meet Buhle Ncoco, founder of Tribal Monkey, a South African accessories brand celebrating African artistry through contemporary beadwork. Based at Constitution Hill’s Creative Uprising Hub, Buhle has built Tribal Monkey around handmade design, local craftsmanship and the preservation of beadwork as a living, evolving art form.

Every piece is handmade by local artisans, combining traditional inspiration with modern design. From beaded bags and bracelets to chokers, earrings, keyrings and pouches, each creation is crafted with care, individuality and a deep respect for African artistry.

Through Tribal Monkey, Buhle also hosts beading workshops that create opportunities for cultural connection, hands-on creativity and skills development. These sessions invite participants to slow down, work with their hands and engage with beadwork as both a creative practice and a way of connecting with heritage.

Buhle’s work demonstrates how creativity can support entrepreneurship, skills development and cultural expression.

Tsholofelo Moagi’s journey began with a township dream: to build a proudly African beverage brand rooted in heritage, purpose and possibility.

For nine years, she has grown SIP-SUM AFRIKA into a 100% Black female-owned business producing GEMERE, an indigenous ginger drink made with natural African ingredients. Enriched with vitamin C, naturally preserved, non-carbonated and containing 0% alcohol, GEMERE reflects the richness of African flavours and innovation.

Beyond beverages, the business offers baked goods and catering services. SIP-SUM AFRIKA has also positioned itself to pursue opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area and take African flavours to markets across the continent.

Stakeholders unite to reimagine Constitution Hill.

Constitution Hill recently convened a stakeholder engagement workshop, bringing together leaders from government, business, tourism, heritage, culture, investment and community sectors to explore the future of the precinct and its contribution to Johannesburg’s economic development.

Addressing the workshop, Gauteng MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, challenged participants to reimagine Constitution Hill as more than a heritage site. She called for a vibrant precinct where culture, entrepreneurship, tourism and the creative economy converge.

The MEC also emphasised the importance of telling South Africa’s story more effectively and positioning the precinct to support Gauteng’s ambitions as a business, tourism and investment destination.

Thirty years after the adoption of South Africa’s Constitution, the engagement reinforced a shared commitment to keeping Constitution Hill relevant, accessible and impactful, while building a legacy that future generations can proudly inherit.

Meet Glorinah Khutso Mabaso, Founder and Creative Director of Renaissance Design, a Pan-African multidisciplinary design company specialising in contemporary African-inspired patterns for interiors, fashion and product design.
Born in Jane Furse, Limpopo, and raised in Mamelodi, Glorinah describes herself as “a city girl with a rural heart”. Her mission is to reawaken ancient cultural knowledge through pattern design as a visual language.
“Every pattern designed has a story that embodies the essence of ancient Africa, translated visually.”

Rooted in neutral palettes, geometric patterns and simple lines, Renaissance Design creates modern African living archives that preserve and celebrate the continent’s cultural heritage.
