September is Heritage Month! At the JDA development is also about recognizing the deep memory already rooted in Johannesburg, restoring it, and giving it new life.

Throughout September, we’ll be highlighting how our key urban renewal projects—from Constitution Hill to the Johannesburg City Library—help us Remember, Restore, Reconnect, and Reimagine our shared history.

🏛️ Where public art keeps history alive.

This Friday, we turn the spotlight to the restored Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Fordsburg. Created by artist Usha Seejarim, the artwork commemorates the historic events of 16 August 1908, when Mohandas K. Gandhi led more than 3,000 people to the Hamidia Mosque, where registration passes were burned in protest against discriminatory legislation.

At the heart of the memorial is a cast-iron cauldron containing a zoetrope that brings this significant moment in Johannesburg’s history to life.

Its restoration ensures that this powerful story remains part of our public realm for generations to come.

The Blueprint | Women's Month 2026

The Blueprint honours the women whose courage, resistance and vision helped shape the country we know today, while celebrating the women who continue to build its future.

At the Johannesburg Development Agency, we recognise that development is about more than physical spaces. It is about people, opportunity, inclusion and creating a city that works for generations to come.

This Women’s Month, we remember the women who drew the first lines, celebrate the women building today, and look ahead to those who will build tomorrow.

Empowered Women, Empower the Nation.

As Women’s Month draws to a close, the conversation about women’s participation in building our cities must continue beyond August.

At the JDA, this commitment is reflected through its economic empowerment programme and projects such as Hikhensile Clinic and the Brixton Social Cluster Phase 2, where women-owned contractors are playing a direct role in shaping City of Joburg’s social infrastructure.

🚧 Finishing Touches Underway! 🌉

With major construction works on the Molapo Bridge now substantially complete, the project has entered the close-out stage — bringing this key piece of the Jabulani Transit-Oriented Development closer to the finish line.

Teams are now focused on the final activities:
🔹 Completing the parapet wall
🔹 Finalising walkways and road crossings
🔹 Applying road markings
🔹 Completing the installation of street lighting

Each finishing touch brings us closer to delivering a new connection between Molapo and the Jabulani Node, improving movement and accessibility for the surrounding communities.
