As part of community outreach initiatives of the CGI Johannesburg, Consul General Shri S.Koventhan visited North West Province and met with Indian community members in Mogwase. During the visit, Consul General also offered prayers at the Pancheshwar Mandir and took part in Gayatri Yagna organised by Gayatri Pariwar of South Africa. The Indian community in Mogwase gave a warm welcome to Consul General.

Consul General Shri S.Koventhan accompanied by Consulate team visited “ Satyagraha House” & “ Constitution Hill” in Johannesburg.

During the visit,CG paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and discussed ways for collaboration between the Consulate and these entities.

Both these iconic places have historical significance & are closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha movement in South Africa. The Constitution Hill also highlights the shared philosophies and parallel struggles of Gandhi and Mandela.

Consul General Shri S. Koventhan along with officials from the consulate visited the “Tolstay Farm “ and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi .

Tolstoy Farm (1910-1913) was conceived by Gandhi and his German friend Hermann Kallenbach, who named the place in honour of Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Gandhi wrote to Tolstoy: “ No writing has so deeply touched Mr Kallenbach as yours, and he has taken the liberty, after consultation with me, of naming his farm after you”. Kallenbach’s generosity made the settlement possible, when he bought the property in 1910 and placed it at the disposal of the Satyagrahis.

Gandhi was inspired by the Russian author and moralist Leo Tolstoy, and the two exchanged letters expressing deep mutual admiration. Both shared core ideas of non-violence, identified with the poor and down-trodden, and committed to transforming their lives accordingly. Gandhi’s ideals of civil disobedience guided by the voice of conscience, together with a life of material simplicity, as practised at Tolstoy Farm, were akin to those taught by Tolstoy.

CG thanked and appreciated veteran Shri Mohan Hira for his contributions and services in managing the Tolstoy farm.

Consul General of India Shri S. Koventhan participated in the Onam Celebrations organised by Johannesburg Malayali Association & extended his warm Onam
greetings to all friends from Kerala and Malayali diaspora.
CG also visited the One District One Product stall exhibiting various products from the State of Kerala. Onam is a grand public festival celebrated across communities in South Africa.
