Those first days with a newborn are hard enough when everything goes smoothly.

For a young or first-time mother without support, basic supplies, or anyone to call, it can feel impossible.

That is why Impilo's New Mom Support Packs exist.

Each pack contains:
πŸ’š Baby clothing, including babygros, vests, beanies, and socks
πŸ’š Warm blankets and towels
πŸ’š Nappies and wipes
πŸ’š Baby care products, including Vaseline, rash cream, surgical spirits, and cotton wool
πŸ’š A soft toy for the baby
πŸ’š Personal care items for mom, including sanitary pads, breast pads, and slipper socks

But more than the items inside, each pack carries a message. You are not doing this alone.

If you or someone you know needs support, please reach out.

Sue Krawitz, Director and Founder of Impilo Child Protection & Adoption Services, shares her informed perspective on the ongoing High Court battle surrounding baby saver boxes.

"This issue extends far beyond a legal dispute. It is a profound moral question about how society responds to desperation, poverty, gender-based violence, and the realities faced by vulnerable mothers. At its heart is the fundamental right of every child to survive.

Punishing desperate mothers, or the organisations working tirelessly to provide life-saving alternatives, is not the solution. We must focus on protecting and preserving life, while addressing the underlying challenges that drive women to such desperate circumstances.

The survival, safety, and well-being of the most vulnerable members of our society must remain our highest priority."β€” Sue Krawitz

Across South Africa, baby savers, facilities where mothers can safely relinquish their babies, are at risk of closure and criminalisation.

Close to 90 000 schoolgirls gave birth in a single year in South Africa.

That number is not a reflection of poor choices. It is a reflection of poverty, lack of education, gender-based violence, and communities that did not catch them in time.

Many of these girls drop out of school. Many raise their children alone, without resources or support. Some are still children themselves.

When we address the root causes – safety, education, access to support – we give young girls a real chance. At Impilo, that is exactly what we work towards.

As Child Protection Week draws to a close, we want to say thank you.

Thank you to everyone who shared a post, had a difficult conversation, reported a concern, or simply paid a little more attention to the children around them this week.

That is how change happens. Not all at once, but through consistent, everyday actions by ordinary people who choose to show up.

It's important to remember that the week ends. The work doesn't.

If you want to stay involved, follow our page, support our programmes, or reach out to find out how you can make a difference.
