OR 1 had her hands full this morning at the Johannesburg City Marathon where we literally had a field day with special service calls - the rain turned the field on which hundreds of cars were parked into a literal mud bath and after the race we got called to six vehicles bogged down.
The little Mahindra Scorpio SUV did her thing magnificently with her winch and pure tractor like power, making light of each rescue, regardless of size including a truck.
Guess the most of tomorrow will be spent on getting all the mud out of her.

Second fire this week for Fire Risk S A.
Thatch lapa fire in Mondeor.
Fidelity SecureFire, City of Johannesburg and Fire Risk S A were all in attendance.
Hotspot detection using the infrared camera was a piece of cake.
It's really encouraging to see how the various services all gel together at a call, no egos, no competing, just firefighters all working together towards a common purpose.
So priveledged to be in such a close knit brotherhood.

OR 01 had her first fire today, truck 20km outside Groblersdal bound for Zambia has trailer brakes catch alight. Seeing the smoke emitting and the driver getting his extinguisher, FRSA's off road vehicle, OR1 pulled over and Rob went to the truck drivers assistance. The flames were knocked down with 2 Dry powder extinguishers and then using our thermal camera, we were able to direct a total of 25 litres of water very accurately to areas that were very hot. In the process we managed to avert the one tyre from igniting, which would have resulted in an unstoppable fire with limited resources and would have involved the entire trailer and contents.

Bottom line: using technology when fighting fires enables greater efficiency and reduction of consequential loss.

Slowly but surely we (in the collective sense) seem to be making progress. One of the key points that we highlighted in a recent risk roadshow was the need to adapt to modern development, particularly around Lithium Ion products and Battery Energy Storage Systems. This development is huge in terms of progress and will prove to be the oundation of much needed standards around Lithium related fire safety and firefighting. FRSA welcomes this development!
