• Since the last situational report (week 34, 2026), the following updates are included in this report:
o No new laboratory-confirmed cases of toxigenic diphtheria.
o No new asymptomatic carriers of toxigenic C. diphtheriae.
• Appropriate public health responses were initiated for all suspected and confirmed cases.

This week, the NICD’s Regional Diagnostics Demonstration Centre hosted Introduction to Bioinformatics: Level 2 – Applied Pathogen Genomics: From Genome Assembly to Epidemiological Interpretation, from 1 to 3 September 2026 in South Africa.
The training strengthens participants’ practical skills in pathogen genomics, supporting the use of genomic data for epidemiological interpretation and public health decision-making.
