As we wrap up TVET Month, we reflect on the progress being made to strengthen technical and vocational education and open more opportunities for young people.

The ETDP SETA has launched 16 4IR Centres of Excellence at TVET colleges, with the remaining 4 Centres planned for launch by the end of the current financial year.

The journey also starts earlier, at school level.

In partnership with the Department of Basic Education South Africa, the ETDP SETA has invested R45 million to twin 9 Technical High Schools with TVET colleges that have established 4IR Centres of Excellence.

Through this twinning model, Foundational Labs will be established at the technical high schools, giving learners early exposure to the specialisations offered by their partner TVET colleges and helping them see a clearer path into technical and vocational education.

Together, the ETDP SETA’s investment in the TVET 4IR Centres and school twinning projects stands at nearly R200 million.

And the journey continues, with a long term target of reaching 30 of South Africa’s 50 public TVET colleges by 2030.

Behind these numbers are young people gaining access to new skills, new technologies and new possibilities for their future.

From school to TVET. From foundational skills to future possibilities.

At Pabalelo Primary School in Phokwane Municipality, Northern Cape, the focus was on turning information into something practical: a bursary to consider, a learnership to pursue, a qualification to explore or simply a clearer sense of direction.

The ETDP SETA joined CETA_Official, fellow SETAs and other stakeholders, connecting with learners, out-of-school youth and community members around opportunities in education, training and skills development.

Against the backdrop of TVET Month 2026, the day reflected what access can look like when guidance reaches people where they are.

Because sometimes the first step towards a future is simply discovering that there is a path for you✨

The ETDP SETA participated in the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training Career Expo at the Ikhutseng Sports Facility in Magareng Local Municipality, Northern Cape.

The expo brought together PSET institutions, SETAs and other stakeholders to engage directly with learners, young people and community members on the education, training, skills development and career opportunities available to them.

It was encouraging to see community members asking questions, exploring different pathways and taking the time to learn more about the options that could shape their next steps.

Among the leaders in attendance were Cllr Neo Mase, Mayor of Magareng Local Municipality and Hon. Sedukanelo Tshepo David Louw, Member of Parliament.

The engagement comes as South Africa marks TVET Month 2026 under the theme:

“TVET: The Inclusive Home of Occupational Excellence, Driving the Skills Revolution.”

For the ETDP SETA, career exhibitions such as these are an important opportunity to take career guidance, skills development information and access to opportunities closer to communities, one conversation at a time.

The ETDP SETA participated in the Bizana Career Expo at Maqongwana Senior Secondary School in Bizana, Eastern Cape.

Hosted by the LGSETA in partnership with Honourable Yanga Govana, MP, Member of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, the expo gave learners and unemployed youth access to career guidance, post-school education and training opportunities, bursary information and skills development pathways.

The day created space for young people to ask questions, explore possibilities and begin thinking more clearly about life after school.

Every conversation was a chance to guide, encourage and remind young people that their future is worth planning for.

As part of the MEC’s Mandela Outreach, the ETDP SETA Limpopo Provincial Office partnered with the Limpopo Department of Education for a Mandela Day outreach programme at Ridoshuma Community Creche in Mdodonga Ha-Kutama, Vhembe West Education District.

The day brought the spirit of service to life through painting and the handover of educational toys to encourage learning through play.

For the young learners, the visit brought colour, excitement and joy, while reminding the ETDP SETA that brighter futures begin where children are cared for, supported and given room to grow.

As Nelson Mandela said:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Through this outreach, the ETDP SETA continues to honour Madiba’s legacy by helping turn early learning spaces into places of care and possibility.

As part of the ETDP SETA’s Mandela Day celebrations, the Mpumalanga Provincial Office brought warmth, smiles and care to Prosperity Pre-School and Day Care.

The visit created beautiful moments of play, laughter and connection, reminding us that kindness does not have to be grand to be meaningful.

Through every shared smile and simple act of giving, the ETDP SETA continues to honour Madiba’s legacy by supporting the early foundations of learning.

As Nelson Mandela said:

“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”

Through this visit, those hands helped turn kindness into action.
