Vikela Mzansi Pilot Programme in partnership with Contribute Foundation | Voices from the Community

Discussions at Mphethi Mahlatsi Secondary School highlighted the realities many young people face when it comes to substance abuse. Teachers and learners reflected on how trauma, difficult home environments, peer pressure, and social media influence can shape the choices young people make.

One teacher shared the growing challenge schools face without enough social workers and counsellors to support learners dealing with personal struggles and trauma.

“When learners are constantly fighting or acting out, we often find deeper issues at home. Some are dealing with trauma and circumstances that go far beyond the classroom.”

Young people also spoke honestly about how substance abuse can become a coping mechanism for those facing abuse and instability at home.

“I think some of our peers start drinking because of what they are going through at home. Some are facing abuse, so they cope using alcohol and drugs, and then it becomes addiction.”

These conversations remind us that protecting our youth requires stronger support systems and collaboration between schools, families, and communities.

A proud moment for Tabula Rasa.

On Tuesday, 28 April, 80 young people graduated from our year-long SEO and IT programme, funded by the Leopold Bachmann Foundation. This milestone marks the completion of a transformative journey and the start of new opportunities for each graduate.

Over the past year, these young people have developed critical digital skills and strengthened their readiness for an evolving world of work. Their commitment, resilience, and growth speak to the real impact of accessible, meaningful education.

This was more than a graduation. It was a step towards a more inclusive digital future.
