📍 BIODIVERSITY IN ACTION (Part 4 of 5)

🌱 DID YOU KNOW?
As highlighted by Gauteng MEC for Environment, Hon. Ewan Botha, during the International Day for Biological Diversity commemoration, the Gauteng Department of Environment has permitted approximately 50 wildlife processors into Gauteng’s growing wildlife economy.

A sustainable wildlife economy supports economic activity while promoting the responsible use of living wildlife and healthy ecosystems through sectors such as tourism, game farming and biodiversity trade.

This demonstrates that environmental conservation and economic opportunity can work together, creating jobs, supporting livelihoods and strengthening long-term environmental sustainability.

Because protecting biodiversity also means unlocking sustainable growth. 🌍🦒

Today, the Gauteng Department of Environment proudly participated in the IAIAsa Gauteng Student Symposium hosted by the University of Johannesburg under the theme, “Innovating for Impact: Advancing Sustainable Futures through IEM.”

The symposium created a valuable platform for postgraduate students, academics and environmental practitioners to exchange ideas, strengthen scientific writing skills and explore practical solutions to urgent environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and sustainable resource management.

The Department contributed to meaningful discussions on environmental management and sustainability, while also engaging with the next generation of environmental professionals who are helping shape a more sustainable future for Gauteng and South Africa

We remain committed to supporting platforms that connect academia, government and industry, because these partnerships are vital for developing practical, evidence based responses to environmental challenges and advancing sustainable development in Gauteng.

🌱 DID YOU KNOW?
As highlighted by Gauteng MEC for Environment, Hon. EwanBotha, during the International Day for Biological Diversity commemoration, Gauteng Department of Environment has issued permits to over 130 game farmers across the province.

Responsible environmental permitting helps ensure that land remains productive while safeguarding threatened species, protecting ecosystems and preserving critical water resources. It is through this balance that conservation and economic development can move forward together.

By supporting a regulated and sustainable wildlife economy, Gauteng continues to demonstrate that environmental stewardship and growth are not competing priorities, they are partners in building a resilient future.

Today, the Gauteng Department of Environment is hosting a Special Technical Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) Meeting at Gold Reef Conference Centre.

The meeting is chaired by Head of Department, Matthew Sathekge, and brings together representatives from all 11 municipalities across Gauteng. The session provides a platform for municipalities to present progress reports, share challenges, and strengthen collaboration on key environmental priorities.

Through cooperative governance and strategic partnerships, the Department continues to work with municipalities to advance sustainable development, improve environmental management, and build a cleaner, greener Gauteng for all.

🎥 FLASHBACK | World Environment Day 2026

As we reflect on an impactful World Environment Day, we look back at MEC Ewan Botha’s keynote address, where he reaffirmed Gauteng’s commitment to environmental restoration, climate resilience and sustainable development.

Under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” the MEC called on all residents to play their part in protecting the environment and building a greener future for generations to come.

From meaningful discussions to the planting of 300 trees, the day served as a powerful reminder that climate action starts with each of us.
