Ranging from studio production techniques such as; Editing and Sequencing Audio and MIDI, to a live performance approach of Session View Follow Actions, Live Template Design, Controllerism and the Integration of External Instruments and hardware with Ableton Live.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the second session of our Designing Racks workshop at the Goethe-Institut South Africa yesterday! It was fantastic to spend the afternoon exploring creative instrument design in Ableton Live and building an expressive multisampled Mbira Instrument Rack together.

🎛️ DESIGNING RACKS — FREE ABLETON WORKSHOP
Join us for another Ableton User Group Johannesburg workshop at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg on Wednesday, 5 August at 4PM!

In this hands-on session, we’ll be building a multisampled Mbira instrument from provided samples and transforming it into an incredibly expressive software-based acoustic instrument using Ableton Live.
We’ll explore how to go beyond simply recreating the sound of an acoustic instrument — using Ableton’s instruments, effects and rack-building techniques to create unique sonic textures and expressive possibilities that simply aren't possible in the acoustic domain.

🎛️ Designing Racks | Build Your Own Mbira Instrument in Ableton Live

Ready to take your sound design skills to the next level?

Join us for Designing Racks, a free, hands-on Ableton User Group Johannesburg workshop where we'll build a fully playable Mbira (Kalimba) Instrument Rack from scratch using only Ableton Live's stock devices.

We'll dive into Sampler (or Simpler), MIDI effects, and audio effects to create an expressive multisampled instrument while exploring practical techniques you can use to design your own custom instruments—from traditional acoustic sounds to birdsong and beyond.

💻 Bring your laptop and build the instrument alongside us in real time. Every attendee will receive the complete Ableton Live project file free of charge via the Ableton User Group Johannesburg Discord server, so you can continue learning and experimenting at home.

LiveFlows with Ableton User Group Johannesburg was an incredible deep dive into transforming studio projects into dynamic, expressive live performances. From Session View workflows, stem manipulation, dummy clips, racks and macro mapping, to integrating external synths, live guitar processing, looping, and tactile control with Ableton Push, this session explored practical approaches to building flexible hybrid live rigs.

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg and contributed to such an inspiring evening of knowledge sharing, experimentation, and community. It was amazing to see so many different approaches to performance and creative workflow design being explored in one space.

You’re warmly invited to join Ableton Certified Trainer Emile Hoogenhout at the Goethe-Institut Jhb, the new home of the Ableton User Group Johannesburg, for an inspiring session exploring the latest creative possibilities in Ableton Live 12.3.

In this hands-on workshop, Emile will demonstrate some of the powerful instruments and devices in Live 12.3, including Meld, Roar, Auto Shift, and Drum Sampler, along with new modulation behavior, MIDI transformation tools, and Generator devices for creative sound design and music production.
