WEATHER UPDATE
We are aware of the communities and families that are isolated. The Municipality is working tirelessly to provide help where possible and to secure assistance from other stakeholders, as the situation is very dire.
Please take note of the following safety tips:
SAFETY TIPS
• Stay indoors if possible. Stay away from windows, doors, and anything that could blow in or fall.
• Avoid all travel unless it is a life-threatening emergency.
• If you are on a farm and cut off, stay where you are. Do not attempt to cross flooded rivers, low-lying bridges, or damaged roads.
• Secure loose items, animals, and equipment. Close shutters and doors, and move valuables to higher ground.
• Keep phones charged and conserve battery power. Save emergency numbers.
• Check on elderly, disabled, and neighbours who live alone, but only if it is safe to do so.
• Move to higher ground if you live in a low-lying area or near rivers or streams that are rising.
DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING
• Do not drive or walk through floodwater. It only takes 30 cm of water to sweep away a person or vehicle.
• Do not go near fallen power lines or trees. They may still be live. Report them, but keep a safe distance.
• Do not attempt to repair roofs or structures during the storm. Wait until it is safe.
• Do not spread unverified information. Only share updates from Koukamma Municipality, SAPS, and Eastern Cape Disaster Management.
• Do not allow children to play outside in this weather.
FOR FARMERS & RURAL AREAS
• Move livestock to higher, sheltered ground if it is safe to do so.
• Do not cross flooded drifts. Wait for the water to subside.
• Inform neighbours if you are cut off and need help.
• Report road damage, blocked routes, and trapped persons to Koukamma Municipality Disaster Management or SAPS Joubertina, Kareedouw, or Storms River.
• Protect stored feed, seed, and equipment from water damage where possible.
