As part of the ongoing Women’s Month programme, Eastern Cape Premier, Hon. Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, together with the MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements, Hon. Siphokazi Lusithi, MPL Asanda Tebekana. Executive Mayor of Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Cllr. Deon De Vos and Koukamma Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Sam Vuso, joined residents of Ward 5 for the handing over of a fully furnished house to Candy Mntambo in Wittekleibosch.

A fully furnished house was handed over to Ms Mntambo, a woman living a disability. The house has been specially designed and fitted with accessibility features, including a wheelchair-accessible ramp and other necessary modifications to ensure greater comfort, safety, independence and dignity.

Overcome with gratitude, Ms Mntambo expressed her appreciation to government for providing her with a safe and secure home that responds to her specific needs.

The housing handover is a meaningful demonstration of government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable women and ensuring that persons with disabilities have access to decent, safe and dignified housing.

The delegation visited an ISUP (Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme) project in Thornham, where the delegation engaged with community leaders on matters relating to land and title deeds, providing an opportunity to listen directly to community concerns and discuss possible interventions.

The delegation also conducted an oversight visit along the R62, which was severely damaged by the heavy rains experienced during May and June. The visit provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress of rehabilitation efforts, and engage with relevant stakeholders on interventions to restore this critical road infrastructure.

They also visited Waterval, where farm roads were assessed following extensive damage caused by the recent heavy rains. The assessment will assist in determining the extent of the damage and the interventions required.

REFUSE REMOVAL SERVICE UPDATE

As previously communicated regarding refuse removal backlogs across the Koukamma Municipal area, the Refuse Collection Section is currently experiencing significant challenges due to the maintenance and breakdown of refuse collection vehicles.

To ensure that all communities continue to receive this essential service, the Department is required to temporarily deviate from its normal refuse collection schedule and redeploy available resources to areas most affected by the backlog.

The normal schedule of the Tsitsikamma refuse collection truck is as follows:

Thursday: Coldstream
Friday: Woodlands

However, the Tsitsikamma refuse collection truck will be reassigned to assist with refuse removal backlogs in the Langkloof area as follows:

Thursday, 6 August 2026: Ravinia and Town households
Friday, 7 August 2026: Krakeel and Misgund areas

As a result, refuse removal services in Coldstream and Woodlands will be affected during this period. The Municipality will communicate revised collection arrangements for these areas in due course.

The Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and cooperation of affected communities while efforts continue to address the current operational challenges and restore normal service schedules.

TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF REFUSE REMOVAL SERVICES

Koukamma Local Municipality wishes to inform all communities that refuse removal services have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Store refuse safely on your property until collection services resume.
Refrain from illegal dumping.
Assist in keeping our communities clean and protecting the environment.

Refuse removal services will resume as soon as weather conditions improve and access to the landfill sites is restored. Updates will be communicated through the Municipality's official communication platforms.

Koukamma Local Municipality sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanks all residents for their patience, cooperation, and understanding.
