COSAS NORTERN CAPE MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE REOPENING OF BASIC EDUCATION SECTOR.

Immediate Release
Wednesday 15 July 2020

Att: Media Houses, Department of Education, Learners and Public

The Congress of South African Students within the Northern Cape has been attentive to the reviving of schools after the move to level 3. The organisation has seen the reviving as an opportunity to bargain with a few of the infrastructural challenges on our schools more especially at rural areas.
The Provincial Leadership of COSAS in Northern Cape is concerned by the neglect of essential wellbeing and security controls on some schools. COSAS has been unambiguous in its support for the reopening of schools because of the difficulties of remote learning. The organisation understands that the living conditions of many learners in the province prevent them from having a conducive learning environment.

The health and safety stay our most extreme obligation and concern within the reviving of the sector and the organisation will not compromise the health of learners and our parents (educators). It has come to our consideration that numerous schools have reopened despite falling short on the regulations. Some don't have significant PPEs for students and staff.
The department has ignored the call of SADTU not to open schools until all necessary equipments and measures are in place and all regulations have been followed, to set up the required systems to curb the spread in our school.

We have observed that department is turning a blind eye on the spread of this pandemic and the closing and reopening of schools that is disturbing the academics. The department thinks that deep cleaning and sanitization without proper screening and testing is the way to stop the spread of this virus.
The CONGRESS OF SOUTH AFRICAN STUDENTS (COSAS) IN THE NORTHERN CAPE has note that the infections have been increasing since the reopening of the schools and inevitably affecting schooling. The Science evolution: When the debate about reopening schools began it was guided by the science that was explicit that the children were not susceptible to infections. We therefore urge the department to temporarily shutdown all the schools in the Province just to stop the spread of this virus and save lives, as much as we want to save the academic year and also to keep the credibility of our education we must also spare the lifes of both our learners and parents. The organisation have send proposals to the department on how to save the academic without putting the lives of both learners and educators at risk.

COSAS NORTHERN CAPE MEDIA STATEMENT

20 April 2020

Receive our revolutionary greetings.

We understand that Congress of South African Students is an autonomous student organisation so it's with surprise for the Province of Notherncape to see through social media platform that Cosas has a National Task Team of which we don't know how it was appointed.
However we are clear as Cosas in the province that we distance ourselves from the Self appointed NTT that's out there for their personal interests in the name of South African learners.
We further want to acknowledge the 19th NEC led by Comrade Thabang Mokoena as President and comrade Tebogo Magafane as the Secretary General as elected by Conference in Magalisburg in Gauteng Province on the 21-23 February 2020.

As Cosas in the province we want to condemn vandalisation of our Schools,
It is reported that more than 25 schools in the Northern Cape has been vandalised.
We call on our communities to help us protect our schools. It is a clear reflection that safety in our public schools is in question.

We further want to reject the E-learning program implemented by Department of Education because majority of schools in our province are disadvantaged schools so E-learning is going to be a challenge.
They failed to implement E-learning when we called for it.

During this Global Pandemic lives of our learners are on a pipeline
Therefore we call on government to place proper measures to suit all learners in South Africa.

The Department of Education must take our learners serious,It cannot be that we have a lot of unemployed young graduates of teaching yet they take celebrities to teach in this E-learning programmes.

COSAS NORTHERN CAPE MEDIA STATEMENT

The crisis of access to free public education in the Northern Cape is becoming a serious challenge...it is evident that the education system is failing to defend our learners from socio-economic issues that are becoming barriers to access to education for all and progressive performance.

The Organization advocates as chief custodians for our constituency to learn without fear, hence we embarking on this journey to fight against the element of gansterism in our institutions, however we equally voice out to the defence of our constituency against mob justice by the community tactical response initiative. We standing firm against all reactionary forces that odd to defy the success of this revolution.

We note that the DOE have conducted an investigation regarding the case we've launched to them and the outcomes of the investigation are contradicting and incorrect because the learners involved in the investigation were suspended and they are in GRADE 12. We are concerned on the basis that learners were suspended but the school failed to provide the charge sheet for that matter.

We are worried if the investigation really took place because even after the process the (WANYA TSOTSI) barricaded school and learners were physically assaulted by community members authorized by the school SMT.

We further call for the MEC to stop being so busy and avoiding the matters before it gets out of hand like what lately transpired at BOTHITONG HIGH SCHOOL.

We are brave to inform the public that we will continue to learn without fear and we are prepared to die for access to free public education.

COSAS NORTHERN CAPE STATEMENT ON THE OUTCOMES OF THE PEC MEETING

COSAS NC sat its PEC meeting on 08-07-2017 in Kuruman to discuss issues affecting the movement and chant a way forward, The PEC discuss the future of our students and saw the of building political soldiers, of which we as an organization we should work on building a cadre as p*e resolutions of Mangaung ANC Conference, and align ourselves with the NDR, because we are the beneficiaries of the NDR. We also believe that when a scientific political education of the current political dispensation is placed in the hands of our students it becomes a powerful weapon of the revolution that is necessary for the creation of just order out the relative chaos.

The PEC further discussed the issue of our current organizational character and realised with the current problems we are faced with, we need a theoretical outlook, which will be able to guide us and to enable us to weigh historically need for change against actual material benefits and to enable to us to act creatively.

The PEC saw it fit to take the following resolutions to keep the movement moving:
-To sit the PGC on the 3-4 August 2017
-For JTG to go for RGC before the PGC
-To implement Each One Teach One program to improve the results of our province
-To hold political induction every month in every region to help develop cadres for broader MDM structures
- To call for unisex toilets to accommodate LGTB in our schools
- To call for sickbays in our schools and have in-service training for doctors and Nurses
- To call for incorporation of Nated program starting from Grd 10- 12 to be able to adapt to unstable economy and produce skilled students
- Lastly to distance ourselves from what Former SG Khulekani is doing in the name of the organization, and to call NDC for few NEC members implicated in what Former SG is doing and to reaffirm our for President Zama and Acting SG Venus Blennies.

We further concluded our meeting with a theme "With Scientific political Knowledge the students become skillful soldiers of the revolution".
