Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Disease Control in Agriculture

The second session of Day 2 focused on natural disasters, disaster risk reduction and management within the agricultural sector. The discussions were particularly significant in light of the current Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak affecting the country.

To date, the Province has recorded ten (10) laboratory-confirmed outbreaks and a total of 55 reported cases across various districts and production systems. These cases include commercial farms, feedlots, emerging farmers and communal livestock systems.

The Department has significantly intensified vaccination and disease control measures in affected and surrounding areas and remains committed to protecting the province’s livestock sector. This commitment was reiterated by Dr Letsie, Director of the Department’s Veterinary Services Programme, during his presentation outlining the Department’s vaccination interventions and disease management efforts across the province.

Ms Kumang from the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit emphasised that disasters, whether natural or human-induced, continue to result in substantial losses and damage for agricultural producers. As the first point of contact for farming communities, extension practitioners must remain well-informed and adequately equipped to provide agricultural disaster risk reduction support services, including prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and relief interventions.

📍🌾Fourth Annual Provincial Extension and Advisory Services Conference Promotes Knowledge Sharing and Innovation

The fourth annual provincial extension conference continued with more information sharing around the various issues impacting the extension profession. The first session of the day centred around presentations and discussions on the role of learning networks in service delivery, market-driven agricultural production, the use of social media by smallholder producers and extension practitioners, agricultural academic programmes as well as climate-smart agricultural practices.

As stated in MEC Mothlaping’s opening address, extension practitioners are the first contact between agricultural producers and different stakeholders. In their roles as teachers, support systems and facilitators, it is important that these officers are equipped with the latest knowledge and techniques to assist farmers and communities to maximise their yields, strive towards sustainable production and improve their livelihoods.

These interactive dialogues ensure that extension practitioners learn from each other as well as the guest presenters from various institutions across the country.
