"Leadership must constantly respond to emerging challenges", says Speaker Fufe Makatong

This, Speaker Makatong has pronounced during a meet and greet session with the employees of the Legislature this morning.

In her engagement with the employees, Speaker Makatong spoke robustly on pertinent issues she has observed that need urgent correction, the most immediate being time management, from top management to the most junior employee. A bad organisational culture negatively affects the ultimate goal being service delivery to the community, she reiterated.

Speaker Makatong encouraged employees to embrace opportunities for development and invest in their academics and even beyond academia, invest in their own personal integrity and self-cultivation.

The Speaker has committed to walking this journey with all employees.
Listen where she needs to listen; intervene where she must intervene; she has committed not to interfere in the administration and assures to provide leadership where it is required.

" Together, let us protect the Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, let us ensure that it remains an institution worthy of the trust placed in it by the people of the Northern Cape", Speaker Fufe Makatong

Visionary Leadership in Action: Speaker Makatong holds critical engagements with Management

In line with her vision of strengthening the Legislature, Speaker held robust engagements with the Secretary of the Legislature, Mr Patrick Moopelwa and the executive management.

Critical issues pertaining to the Legislature administration, Members Affairs, Committees and Public Participation, as well matters of the legislative sector as a whole, were discussed.

The Speaker has given the line of march and the priority is putting the interests of the people of the Northern Cape province.

Key to the Speaker’s immediate priorities is maintaining the Legislature’s clean audit outcome through good governance and ensuring that it practically translates into service delivery.

Bringing the Legislature even closer to our communities, and encouraging the community to petition the Legislature-it is the people’s constitutional right.

Strengthening oversight over the executive and holding departments accountable for every cent spent.

Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, we remain vigilant always for our people!

Building Active Citizens, One Brigade at a Time

Today, the Frances Baard Regional Office joined the Office of the Premier’s Civic Education Brigades Induction Programme welcoming young people from across our district into a 24-month journey of empowerment, service, and civic responsibility.

As part of the Civic Education session, the Brigades were introduced to the three core functions of the Legislature:
📜 Law-making — passing legislation that shapes how our province is governed
🔍 Oversight — holding the Executive accountable for how public resources are used and services are delivered
🗣️ Public Participation — creating platforms for communities to have their say in the decisions that affect their lives

Understanding these three pillars is the first step toward becoming an active, informed citizen one who doesn’t just receive government, but engages with it.

Moments like these also tell a bigger story: when the Office of the Premier, the Legislature, and our municipalities work in step, sharing platforms, resources, and purpose, the impact multiplies. Intergovernmental collaboration isn’t a buzzword; it’s how service delivery actually reaches the ground, and how youth development becomes more than a promise.

To the 52 Civic Education Brigades stepping into this role: know your rights, know your institutions, and never underestimate the power of public participation.
