Travel Advisory: R335 Road and Greater Addo Area
Over the past two to three weeks, there has been an increase in protest activity along the R335 near Motherwell Township. With the upcoming local elections in November, we anticipate that further protests and temporary road disruptions may occur in the weeks ahead.
Visitors should note that the situation is primarily concentrated in and around the Motherwell Township area, including the first 12km of the R335 from the N2 turnoff, where the road passes through Motherwell.
While conditions can change at short notice, we recommend that visitors avoid this section of the R335 where possible and consider alternative routes when travelling through the Greater Addo area.
Our recommended option:
Addo Elephant National Park access:
Enter via Matholweni Gate, accessed from Colchester. This provides a convenient alternative to travelling through the affected area and offers an easy way to begin exploring the wider Addo region.
A scenic alternative:
For visitors travelling towards Addo and the surrounding area, consider taking the N2 via Nanaga to Paterson, before continuing around the park on the R342 towards your destination. Although this route takes a little longer, it offers a beautiful and enjoyable drive through the surrounding countryside and citrus orchards.
We encourage all visitors to plan their journeys in advance, remain alert to local conditions, and allow some flexibility in their travel plans. The vast majority of travel to and within the Greater Addo area remains unaffected, and with a little planning, visitors can continue to enjoy a safe and memorable experience in and around Addo.
Please check local road conditions before setting out, particularly if travelling through the Motherwell area.
