DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT EMPOWERS LEARNERS THROUGH AWARENESS PROGRAMME

FIGHTING SUBSTANCE ABUSE, BULLYING AND GANGSTERISM IN OUR SCHOOLS

The Department of Social Development hosted an important awareness programme for primary school learners from Diamanthoogte Combined School, focusing on the prevention of substance abuse, bullying and gangsterism.

The initiative sought to educate young learners about the dangers associated with these social challenges, promote positive behaviour, encourage responsible decision-making and empower children to become responsible members of society.

The programme was honoured by the presence of senior officials from the Department of Social Development, including:

- Ms Diteboho Manana – National Director: Social Crime Prevention.
- Ms Sharon Tyhokolo – GBV Social Worker responsible for Kopanong and Mohokare.
- Ms Sherill Ann Farai – Social Work Supervisor: Social Crime Prevention, Substance Abuse and GBV, District Office.
- Mrs Maria Michael – Manager: Social Crime Prevention, Substance Abuse and GBV, National Office.
- Ms Megan Murphy – Probation Officer.
- Mr Teboho Mpatshehla – Assistant Probation Officer.
Educator,Charlton Visagie and Ms Ericson accompanied the Learners from Diamanthoogte Combined School

The officials work with children in conflict with the law and contributed valuable insights on child protection, crime prevention, rehabilitation and making positive choices.

The Executive Mayor of Letsemeng Local Municipality, Cllr Andrew Visagie, also honoured the invitation, demonstrating the municipality's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at protecting children and addressing social challenges affecting communities.

The programme highlighted the importance of early intervention, education and collective responsibility in preventing substance abuse, bullying and gangsterism among young people.

Protecting our children today means building safer, stronger and more responsible communities tomorrow.

Letsemeng Local Municipality welcomes initiatives that contribute towards creating safe learning environments where children can grow, learn and realise their full potential.

LETSEMENG COMMONAGE FARMERS EMPOWERED THROUGH CAPACITY-BUILDING WORKSHOP

Strengthening Commonage Management and Creating Opportunities for Sustainable Farming

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is currently conducting a capacity-building workshop for the newly elected Commonage Farmers Committee of Koffiefontein.

The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the management and governance of municipal commonage land while empowering emerging farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop sustainable and commercially viable farming enterprises.

Key areas of focus during the workshop include:

- Strengthening Commonage Management and Governance: Promoting effective leadership, accountability, responsible land utilisation and sound management practices within the newly elected committee.
- Improving Financial and Non-Financial Support: Exploring opportunities for farmers to access financial assistance, agricultural training, technical expertise, mentorship and other available support programmes.
- Promoting Sustainable Farming Practices: Addressing existing challenges faced by commonage farmers and identifying practical solutions to improve agricultural productivity and long-term sustainability.
- Creating Pathways to Commercial Farming: Equipping emerging farmers with the necessary knowledge and understanding to gradually transition from subsistence and small-scale farming towards commercially viable agricultural enterprises.

The workshop also highlights the important role of the newly elected committee in representing farmers' interests, promoting cooperation and ensuring that municipal commonage resources are managed responsibly and productively.

Building a Stronger Agricultural Future for Letsemeng

The initiative represents an important step towards empowering local farmers, encouraging agricultural entrepreneurship and unlocking the economic potential of municipal commonage land.

Through continued cooperation between the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Letsemeng Local Municipality and the farming community, the objective is to build a more organised, productive and sustainable agricultural sector that contributes to local economic development, food security and job creation.

RESTORING DIGNITY AND PRIDE THROUGH MUNICIPAL INFRASTRUCTURE REVITALISATION!

LETSEMENG LOCAL MUNICIPALITY | PETRUSBURG

Revitalising our facilities, restoring institutional pride and promoting responsible financial management.

The Letsemeng Local Municipality's Community Services Department is making remarkable progress in renovating and revitalising the Petrusburg Municipal Unit Offices.

The ongoing improvements include the installation of new floor tiles, upgrading of toilet facilities, and repainting of walls and ceilings, giving the municipal offices a fresh and welcoming appearance.

What makes this initiative particularly significant is that the project is being undertaken in-house, utilising municipal resources and personnel rather than outsourcing the work to external service providers.

This approach demonstrates the municipality's commitment to cost-conscious service delivery, making better use of available internal capacity while reducing expenditure associated with outsourcing.

Beyond the physical improvements, this initiative is about something much greater: restoring dignity, pride and a sense of ownership in our municipal institutions.

Municipal buildings are not merely workplaces. They are public institutions that should reflect professionalism, accountability and respect for the communities they serve.

The municipality commends the Community Services Department and all employees involved for their dedication, hard work and commitment to improving municipal facilities.

Every improvement, no matter how small, contributes towards building a municipality that residents and employees can be proud of.

It's work in progress.We cannot wait to see the final outcome of this intentional intervention by the Mayor,Cllr Andrew Visagie and Acting Municipal Manager,Mr Mbulelo Jafta.
