After many, MANY months we finally found an old age home for one of our elderly men. This has been a long battle and for other elderly residents it is still an ongoing battle.

BUT we take this as a win and we are still celebrating.

Last week one of our manager’s and a resident went to visit him to check in on him. He has settled in and from the voice note he sent to us he is very grateful to our social worker and Tower of Life for all that was done for him.

For me I am so thankful that he finally has a “softer” home than the shelter can offer him.

One of the things he mentioned was that he has his own room but that he does not have a TV. For a man that has become used to sharing his sleeping area with 80+ men it must be very strange to have such silence around him.

We don’t have a TV that we can give him. So, we are asking if someone might have a working TV they can donate to him. We would love to give him something to watch at night please.

Thank you to those who heard our call for soap!

Thank you for the delivery, drops off and financial contributions. We are so grateful. We can take a breath for a bit and provide for those we serve.

We are asking for assistance with donation of soap to the shelter where residents are expected to shower every day.

Due to the weather, we have had an increase in people staying inside (last night there was 94 residents) and that means more soap being given out. We are starting to run low and would need soap soon.

Being responsible for the donations we receive we find that cutting the soap in half curbs wastage. That is what the photo depicts. If you are able to assist with soap or shower gel it will be greatly appreciated.

Delivery can be made to Corner Church and Rissik Streets, Krugersdorp (the shelter is open 24/7 so any time will do). This address can also be used to arrange drop offs by delivery services.

If you are unable to do this but will still want to help please consider an EFT with the reference SOAP.

On the 9th it is International Women’s Day. At Tower of Life we provide meals and psycho-social services for women who are on the streets.

Their stories and their heartaches are varied and their lives are never soft and gentle. We are hoping to find ways to make the day special for the ladies we serve and I was wondering if there are any ideas that you can think of that will give them a few hours of “spoils”?

For next week we are needing the following ingredients for our menu please. If you would like to help any donation will make a difference to us, so please do not think you are expected to buy a huge amount.

Milk (2l x 12), Sugar (10kg), Spaghetti (10kg), Carrots (5kg) – or any other fresh vegetables will be incorporated, Mabela (10kg) – or Oats.
Tea is something we provide for residents when they book in as a welcome against the cold.

For those who are wondering about quantities:

We use 10kg of all kinds of meats (mince, chicken, wors, Russians, tinned fish),

We use 10kg of rice, pastas, oats, samp, mabela (we have had a donation of mielie meal so at the moment am not in need of that),

We use 10kg of vegetables: potatoes, onions (or any vegetables like spinach or cabbages – although that is not usually 10kg).

Spices and sauces are also welcome (we usually buy 1kg and keep it for a while).

Oil is 5l per week.

Tinned foods are welcome e.g. we use about 20tins of baked beans per week.

For a side note:
If we had bread that we could give out for lunch we would use 1kg x 3 of margarine and a big tin (3kg) of jam/peanut butter. We use about 10-15 loaves per meal. We are also always needing toiletries especially bath soap.
