Another beneficiary, Samuel Malesa, could not contain his excitement as he expressed his gratitude to government for making homeownership a reality for his family.

Born in 1964, Samuel has spent most of his life in Hekpoort, moving from one dilapidated farm compound to another due to the lack of stable and permanent accommodation. The poor living conditions and constant relocations negatively affected the stability, security and overall well-being of his household.

Today, that chapter has come to an end. Samuel and his family of five are among the beneficiaries who have been allocated a two-bedroom house at the Dr Sefularo Housing Project.

With the keys to a place they can finally call their own, Samuel says the house represents more than just shelter- it represents a new beginning for the family who now can enjoy the comfort and stability of a permanent home.

SYSTEM UPDATES AFFECT MY METER APP

Please note that the Valuation Division is currently updating erf numbers on the Munsoft system to align with the Legal Property Identifier reflected in Deeds Office records.

As a result, some customer account information may be temporarily affected, including access to meter reading history on the My Meter App.

Customers affected by this process from 1 June 2026 who are unable to view or submit meter readings via the App are requested to submit their readings directly to [email protected] or [email protected] during this period.

The municipality's IT service provider is currently merging the affected property records on the system. Once the process has been completed, account history and related functionality should again be available on the App.

GAUTENG GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER HOUSING UNITS TO DESERVING BENEFICIARIES AT THE DR SEFULARO HOUSING PROJECT

Listen as Hendrick Manamela Makobolo shares his joy after being allocated a two-bedroom unit at the Dr Sefularo Housing Project.

For years, Hendrick and his family lived in a nearby informal settlement without access to electricity and proper sanitation. Employed at a farm in Hekpoort, he has worked hard to provide for his loved ones despite challenging living conditions.

Speaking to our team, Hendrick expressed his gratitude and excitement as he prepares to move into his new home with his wife, children, and mother. For the family, this house represents far more than just a roof over their heads - it is a symbol of dignity, security, and convenience.

This is one of many stories that demonstrate the life-changing impact of the Dr Sefularo Housing Project. For the first time, Hendrick and his family will have a decent place to call home, complete with electricity and proper sanitation.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed his excitement as beneficiaries were finally allocated their long-awaited homes. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Gauteng Provincial Government to secure the necessary funding to ensure the completion of Phase 2.

Panyaza also encouraged beneficiaries and residents to take pride in their community by looking after the development and preserving its infrastructure. He urged residents not to erect corrugated iron structures around the houses, emphasising the importance of maintaining the dignity, appearance and value of the houses.

The beneficiaries received two-bedroom houses equipped with solar geysers and zinc roofing, with plumbing infrastructure already installed to support basic household services.

Stakeholders who supported the handover ceremony included West Rand District Municipality Mayor Dennis Thabe, MMC Bovungane, MMC Cynthia Mankazana and MMC Merriam Mogoje, who also served as the programme director for the event.

GAUTENG GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER HOUSING UNITS TO DESERVING BENEFICIARIES AT THE DR SEFULARO HOUSING PROJECT

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, committed to the community that the department will make funding available for the implementation of Phase 2 of the Dr Sefularo Housing Project.

The second phase will see the construction of the remaining 120 two-bedroom housing units, bringing the total number of houses delivered through the project to 190, as outlined in the approved development plans.

MEC Motara also conveyed her condolences to the family of a beneficiary who sadly passed away shortly after signing the subsidy allocation documents for the housing unit. She acknowledged the family's loss and reaffirmed government's commitment to ensuring that the beneficiary's family receives the support due to them.

In addition to the housing units, the development boasts significant bulk infrastructure investments aimed at ensuring sustainable service delivery. These include a 1,424-kilolitre elevated water storage tank, newly developed water and sewer reticulation networks, and a sewer package plant installed by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The integrated infrastructure development ensures that beneficiaries will have access to reliable water and sanitation services, creating a sustainable and dignified living environment for residents of the new housing development.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele reflected on the long journey the municipality has undertaken with the people of Hekpoort.
He highlighted that the municipality, working together with communities, had to intervene and provide infrastructure support in surrounding settlements that had begun to emerge around Hekpoort, largely driven by farm evictions and resulting housing pressure.

“Today, you have a place that you can call home,” the Executive Mayor emphasised, highlighting the significance of the housing delivery milestone for beneficiaries who have waited many years for formal accommodation and access to basic services.

The municipality further noted that the development was previously defended in court earlier in January, when the Hekpoort Association approached the courts seeking an interdict to halt the project. Mogale City successfully opposed the application and the matter was resolved in favour of continuing with the housing development, allowing the project to proceed and reach today’s handover milestone.

The delivery of these housing units represents not only the completion of Phase 1 of the Dr Sefularo Housing Project, but also a broader commitment to restoring dignity, stability and access to formal housing for qualifying beneficiaries in the area.

Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, has also joined the celebrations and will officially hand over houses to deserving beneficiaries at the Dr Sefularo Housing Project.

The project was first approved by Council in 2011. As a greenfield development, Mogale City Local Municipality was required to install the necessary bulk infrastructure and services before the construction of housing units could commence.

Located in Hekpoort, the area predominantly is surrounded by farms, the project seeks to address the housing needs of vulnerable residents. Many of the beneficiaries are farm workers who have been living in nearby informal settlements without access to adequate basic services such as reliable water supply, sanitation and electricity.

The handover of these housing units marks a significant step towards restoring dignity and improving the living conditions of residents who have long awaited access to formal housing.

GAUTENG GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER HOUSING UNITS TO DESERVING BENEFICIARIES AT THE DR SEFULARO HOUSING PROJECT

Today is a day of celebration!

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, together with the Executive Mayor, Lucky Sele, have arrived for a briefing on the housing allocation of the Dr Sefularo Housing Project.

Today, the Gauteng Government will hand over 70 completed two-bedroom housing units to qualifying beneficiaries as part of Phase 1 of the project. The handover marks a significant milestone in government's efforts to provide dignified housing and improve the quality of life for residents in the area.

The MEC was briefed on the beneficiary allocation process, with all beneficiaries selected from Ward 32. The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements indicated that the allocation process also considered GEYODI (Gender, Youth and Persons with Disabilities) principles to ensure that vulnerable and previously disadvantaged groups benefit from government housing programmes. As a result, some of the housing units were allocated to young people and persons living with disabilities.

This development is the first of its kind in the area, once completed, the Dr Sefularo Housing Project is expected to deliver a total of 190 two-bedroom housing units.
