Hoërskool De Kuilen High School

Hoërskool De Kuilen High School VISION OF DKHS

To provide effective and quality education in partnership with the parents. From 1892 to 1905 the dynamic Mr Pieter de Wet was principal.

During November 1868, after a number of unsuccessful attempts, a school was established for the children of the wine and vegetable farmers, the shopkeepers and hoteliers of a little town on the banks of the Kuils River. The following year 38 learners were enrolled – of whom only about 20 attended school regularly. In 1873 this school ceased to function, mainly due to the fact that parents kept chi

ldren out of the school in order to help on the farms. In 1874 the school reopened with great idealism and with the appointment of Mr Charles Villet in 1881, the school and community entered a new era. The gifted Villet family exerted a positive influence on the town, having amongst other things regular music concerts in the school hall. The school grew and in 1897, a new school building (next to the present Shoprite Centre) to accommodate 81 learners, was inaugurated. From 1906 to 1951 the school’s enrolment grew from 118 to 334. A school building, that is at present part of De Kuilen Primary, was occupied in 1939. Nine years later in August 1961, the building complex of the present De Kuilen High School was occupied by senior learners. The school building was extended in 1991 with the addition of a new wing with classrooms, a new staff room and a gallery in the hall. This was followed by 3 new computer classrooms, sport facilities and in 1998, a multi-purpose activity centre. De Kuilen is known countrywide as a school with a proud tradition of academic achievements. Examples of these are matriculants on the merit list of WCED and achievements in the Afrikaans and Mathematics Olympiads. Culturally De Kuilen is also one of the top schools in the Western Cape with many prize winners in eisteddfods in singing, choir and recitation. De Kuilen has also won provincial and countrywide public speaking and debating competitions.

Afrikaans Huistaal

Baie dankie aan me.

Photo Day 2026

We are pleased to inform you that Prestige Photo will be hosting our official school Photo Day for 2026. This service offers a range of photo packages and optional products for parents to choose from.

All learners will participate in the official Photo Day on Friday, 22 May 2026 at De Kuilen High School.

Following the photo session, parents will have the opportunity to place orders for individual photos as well as a variety of additional items, such as mugs, key rings, and more. These photographs will also be used as the official identification images for learners on our updated school database.

We also encourage parents to consider ordering class or bulk school photos, as this contributes to a greater donation to the school.

Further details and ordering information will be shared with parents over the next two weeks.

RCL Week | 20–24 April

The RCL proudly hosted their annual RCL Week, filled with energy, excitement, and unforgettable moments.

One of the week’s highlights saw learners enthusiastically duct taping our Principal, Mr Mellet, back-to-back with RCL chairperson, Zachary Jones. The crowd couldn’t get enough, especially when it came to Mr Mellet, making it a truly entertaining spectacle.

Teachers also joined in on the fun as they were auctioned off for a dunk tank, creating loads of laughter and boosting school spirit. We commend the following teachers for their enthusiasm and willingness to take the plunge:

Mr Albertyn
Mr Julies
Mr Visagie
Mr Engelbrecht
Mr Steenkamp
Mrs Felix
Mrs Morkel-Sadie
Mrs Engelbrecht
Ms Bruwer
Ms Roos

The week wrapped up on a high note with a vibrant colour run. Learners tackled fun obstacles before cooling off on the water jumping castle — the perfect ending to an action-packed week.

It was truly a celebration of unity, laughter, and school pride. Thank you to the RCL for creating such an incredible experience!
