𝗶𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

The iLembe District Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Health, local municipalities, and the iLembe District Traditional Health Practitioners, successfully commemorated African Traditional Medicine Day, observed annually on 31 August to recognise the vital role of traditional healing and indigenous health practitioners in promoting community health and wellbeing.

Addressing attendees at the event held at Johnny Makhathini Hall in Ndwedwe, District Mayor Cllr. Thobani Shandu underscored the importance of preserving African culture, traditions, and indigenous healing practices, noting that traditional health practitioners continue to play a crucial role in providing healthcare services and support to communities across the District.

The engagement also marked the launch of a comprehensive training programme aimed at equipping Traditional Health Practitioners with the knowledge and skills to identify and respond appropriately to various illnesses commonly presented by patients seeking their services. The initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration between the formal healthcare sector and Traditional Health Practitioners through improved disease recognition, referral pathways, and adherence to health regulations.

The programme will further contribute to the development of a reliable database of Traditional Health Practitioners operating within the iLembe District, enabling stakeholders to work collectively in promoting compliance, patient safety, and quality healthcare services.

Representatives from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife also highlighted the importance of ensuring that traditional medicine is sourced and provided in a sustainable manner that protects biodiversity and preserves the natural environment for future generations.

The event reaffirmed the shared commitment of government, Traditional Health Practitioners, communities, and key stakeholders to strengthening partnerships, enhancing health communication, promoting safer healthcare practices, and building healthier communities through collaboration between traditional and conventional healthcare systems.

Maidens from across the iLembe District gathered at Ncedomhlophe Sports Ground in Mandeni today for Day 2 of the annual Siyaya eMhlangeni Bootcamp, following an overnight camp at Sibusisiwe Hall. The bootcamp forms part of preparations for the upcoming uMkhosi woMhlanga (Reed Dance), one of KwaZulu-Natal's most significant cultural celebrations that promotes purity, unity and cultural pride among Zulu maidens.

Led by Her Royal Highness Queen Nomzamo Masesi Myeni-Zulu and iLembe District Municipality Speaker, Cllr Dolly Shandu, together with leaders from Mandeni Local Municipality and members of the Zulu Royal Family, including Princess Nombuso Zulu, the maidens participated in a vibrant procession from Sibusisiwe Hall to Ncedomhlophe Sports Ground.

The programme featured traditional praise singing, cultural teachings and discipline training aimed at instilling the values of respect, humility, self-worth and educational excellence. Through initiatives such as the Siyaya eMhlangeni Bootcamp, the iLembe District continues to play a vital role in preserving cultural heritage while empowering young women to become confident, responsible and future-ready leaders.

The bootcamp remains a powerful platform for nurturing pride in African traditions, strengthening social values and inspiring the next generation to embrace their cultural identity with dignity, confidence and purpose.

The iLembe District Golden Games Team Selection will take place on Tuesday, 01 September 2026, at the Gledhow Cricket Ground in KwaDukuza Municipality.

The selection event forms part of the ongoing Golden Games programme, which promotes active ageing, healthy lifestyles and social inclusion among older persons through sport and recreation. Athletes from across the district will participate in a range of sporting codes as they compete for selection to represent iLembe at the next level of the competition.

The Golden Games continue to showcase the determination, talent and resilience of senior citizens while creating opportunities for older persons to remain physically active and socially connected. The programme also highlights the important role sport plays in enhancing wellness, fostering camaraderie and improving quality of life among senior members of our communities.

The iLembe District Municipality wishes to inform all stakeholders, community members, faith-based organisations, and participants that the Women's Month Commemoration Prayer Against Social Ills, which was scheduled to take place on Friday, 28 August 2026 at Maphumulo Town Hall, has been postponed.

The engagement will now be held on 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟬𝟭 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, at the same venue.

The Municipality sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this postponement and appreciates the understanding and continued support of all attendees.

The iLembe District Municipality looks forward to welcoming all participants on the rescheduled date as we continue to unite in promoting social cohesion, community wellbeing, and positive change across the district.
