The Ingula Nature Reserve is preparing to once again host the annual Wetlands Walk!!!🐸

All are welcome to join in on the day to take in the fresh air, mountain views and learn a bit about the wetlands that have been host and home to some very special creatures, which is what inspired the creation of the Ingula Nature Reserve, an 8000 hectare project containing and protecting 3 endangered habitats of which the high altitude wetlands are one.πŸͺΊ

On Thursday 6 July 2023 Steve McKean from Conservation Outcomes came to Ingula to conduct an investigation. NGS Conservation Officers along with Carina Pienaar and Steven Segang of Birdlife South Africa and Malcolm Drummond representing the Ingula partnership (BLSA, Eskom and the Middelpunt Wetland Trust) joined him for a biomass/grass fuel load assessment of key grassland areas of the nature reserve. Using a disc pasture meter( in the images below) a device featuring a disc of a known diameter and weight on a tube assembled on rod marked to measure the height that the disc stops above the ground when released, this gives an indication of the amount of grass holding the disc above the ground at the specific point tested. After testing a sufficient number of points in an area the average grass fuel load for the area can be determined.
This data can be used in conjunction with remote sensing methods to determine which areas of a veld need to be burnt, grazed, or rested and can be used to assess the effectiveness and impacts of the management practices of the reserve, farm, or land being assessed.

Fire season is here!

And it has been an incredibly windy month. Due to the relentless heavy winds farmers and land owners have been unable to start burning firebreaks. The grass is dry and the winds are strong, in these conditions it is important to remember that fire can spread dangerously quickly.

Please be safe when visiting farms, nature reserves or any open fields this fire season. Avoid lighting open fires and be responsible with cigarette buds, ash from fires or braais and glass bottles any of these could cause grass fires on our sunny, dry, windy, winter days that may spread.

A controlled fire is when we set an area on fire intentionally. It is used as a management tool to manage a specific land area.

Advantages of controlled burning:

1. Remove unpalatable, moribund grass.

2. Conrtol encroachment of undesirable plants.

3. Improve range condition/grazing land.

4. Improve acceptability and nutritional value of species.

5. Controlled fires enrich the soil with burnt materials that decompose and become a rich source of nutrients for seeds to grow.

Happy National Reptile Awareness Day!!!πŸ₯³πŸ’🐍🦎

Today is meant to acknowledge, celebrate, and raise awareness for our scaly friends. Reptiles fill many important roles across all levels and niches of the food webs that form the ecosystems we love and rely on. They are diverse and beautiful animals and inspire fear, awe, and in some cases excitement.

Here are some of the Reptiles recently seen and photographed around the Ingula Nature reserve.
