UTHUKELA DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY INTRODUCES CONTRACTOR FOR LOSKOP WATER WORKS ABSTRACTION PROJECT

UThukela District Municipality has taken another significant step towards addressing water challenges in Wards 2, 3 and 4 of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, with the official introduction of a contractor for the expansion and completion of the Loskop Water Treatment Works. The engagement, held at the Loskop Water Treatment Works, formed part of the municipality’s ongoing commitment to improving water infrastructure and ensuring sustainable access to clean and reliable water for communities.

During the event, UThukela District Mayor, Inkosi NB Shabalala, was accompanied by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Myeza; UThukela District Deputy Mayor, Cllr MC Mkhize; Speaker, Cllr TY Nqubuka; Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Speaker, Cllr Khumalo; Inkosi Mazibuko; Councillors and Administration officials. Their collective presence demonstrated strong collaboration between political leadership, traditional leadership in advancing service delivery and development for communities.

The Mayor of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, Cllr Myeza, expressed appreciation to UThukela District Municipality for responding to the community’s longstanding water challenges. He acknowledged the difficulties experienced by residents as a result of water shortages, which had previously sometimes led to community protests. Mayor Myeza welcomed the intervention and expressed confidence that the project would bring meaningful and lasting change to the affected communities.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr MC Mkhize, also conveyed his appreciation for the continued work and contribution of UThukela District Municipality towards community development. He also acknowledged the progress made in serving communities over the past five years and encouraged continued collaboration in improving the lives of residents. Meanwhile, Inkosi Mazibuko welcomed the intervention by UThukela District Municipality and expressed gratitude for the commitment to bringing much-needed services closer to the people.

Addressing the community, UThukela District Mayor, Inkosi Shabalala emphasised that leadership carries a responsibility to serve communities and respond meaningfully to their needs. He highlighted the importance of servant leadership and ensuring that government interventions respond directly to the challenges faced by communities. The Mayor acknowledged the persistent water shortages experienced by communities, including Mqedanda, and explained that the existing water infrastructure has come under increasing pressure due to population growth and increasing demand for water services.

The project will see the expansion and upgrading of the Loskop Water Treatment Works, with approximately R23 million allocated towards the development of the infrastructure. The project is expected to take approximately eight months to complete and will benefit more than 100 households. It is expected to create seven job opportunities for the local community. The appointed contractor, Maxode Contractors, is expected to commence construction activities within the next two weeks.

Mayor Shabalala further urged community members to take ownership of public infrastructure and refrain from vandalising municipal property, stressing that infrastructure development can only bring lasting benefits if it is properly protected and safeguarded by the communities it serves. As part of immediate relief efforts, Mayor Shabalala also handed over six JoJo tanks to assist the community with water storage while longer-term infrastructure interventions are being implemented.

The Loskop Water Works Abstraction Project represents another important milestone in UThukela District Municipality’s commitment to improving access to reliable water services and responding to the needs of communities.

PUBLIC NOTICE: MAINTENANCE WORKS UNDERWAY IN WAGENDRIFT DAM📌

This notice serves to inform the community of Inkosi Langalibalele local municipality in Estcourt and surrounding areas that we are currently busy working on welding the main steel pipe at the abstraction point in Wagendrift Dam. The Department of Water Affairs has, therefore, shutdown the plant to allow maintenance to proceed.

The operation is expected to take the whole day to complete. Once the maintenance has been completed, then full operations will resume. The community is urged to use water sparingly to manage the situation. We will issue updates as and when the new information becomes available. Apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused.

UTHUKELA – UThukela District Municipality is set to take a significant step towards strengthening water infrastructure in the district with the proceeding of works aimed at completing the Loskop Abstraction Works Project.

The Municipality will host a sod-turning ceremony on Monday, 7 September 2026, at the Loskop Water Treatment Works, which will be led by District Mayor, His Worship the Mayor, Inkosi N. B. Shabalala.

The project forms part of the Municipality’s ongoing efforts to address infrastructure challenges and strengthen the district’s capacity to provide reliable and sustainable water services to communities.

For UThukela, the completion of the Loskop Abstraction Works is a practical intervention aimed at improving the resilience of the district’s water system and ensuring that critical water infrastructure is brought to completion and put to meaningful use.

Mayor Shabalala said the Municipality is determined to see the project through to completion and to ensure that infrastructure investments translate into tangible benefits for communities.

The completion of this treatment works demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure delivery while strengthening the systems required to support sustainable water provision across the district.

Members of the media are invited to attend the sod-turning ceremony.

UTHUKELA DISTRICT CELEBRATES WOMEN AND 70 YEARS OF COURAGE, RESILIENCE AND EMPOWERMENT

UThukela District Municipality successfully hosted its Women’s Day Commemoration 2026 yesterday at the Municipal Boardroom, bringing together municipal leadership, employees, councillors and inspiring guest speakers. The purpose was to celebrate the achievements, resilience and invaluable contributions of women in building stronger families and communities.

This meaningful gathering provided a platform for reflection, empowerment and inspiration, with speakers sharing powerful messages centred around hope, health, confidence, personal wellbeing and women empowerment. The programme commenced with a warm welcome by the General Manager: Social Services, Mrs LP Motaung, who set the tone for a day of meaningful engagement and celebration.

This was followed by remarks on behalf of the Municipal Manager, delivered by Ms GPP Mazibuko, who described women as individuals of substance, strength and resilience. She reminded women of the importance of supporting one another and recognising their own capabilities. “We are clothed in strength and dignity. As women, we face challenges almost every day, but through prayer we overcome them. Let us go back to God, support each other as women and know our capabilities,” Ms Mazibuko said.

A powerful message of encouragement was also delivered by Mama Ndlunkulu, Cllr SV Shabalala, who reminded women of their importance, influence and ability to shape their own futures. She emphasised that women possess the power to build, create and bring their visions to life, and therefore must know themselves and clearly understand what they want to achieve. “There is nothing that can defeat you when your mind is focused on what you want to achieve. Everything begins in the mind”, she alluded.

Mama Ndlunkulu further highlighted the significant role played by women within families, describing women as the “neck that supports the head of the family.” She encouraged women to remain prayerful, believe in themselves and recognise that they are conquerors.

Women were also urged to confidently pursue leadership positions and opportunities wherever they may be found. “Wherever you are, fight for that position,” she encouraged. The Women’s Day Commemoration further featured an inspiring panel of guest speakers who addressed different aspects of womanhood, personal development and wellbeing.

Ms Hlengiwe Mlotshwa, an intimate wear entrepreneur and women’s confidence advocate, shared valuable insights on the importance of self-confidence, self-worth and empowering women to embrace themselves fully. Ms J Msomi, a cancer survivor, shared her inspiring journey of courage and resilience, reminding attendees of the importance of hope, perseverance and inner strength in overcoming life’s most difficult challenges.

The programme also featured Ms H Bolani, who addressed issues relating to mental health, highlighting the importance of emotional wellbeing and encouraging women to prioritise their mental and emotional health. The speakers collectively reinforced the importance of women supporting one another and creating safe spaces where women can grow, heal and thrive.

As UThukela District Municipality commemorates 70 years of courage, resilience and empowerment, women were reminded that they are powerful, capable and resilient, and that their contribution remains essential in shaping families, communities and society as a whole.

The commemoration served as a powerful reminder that when women are empowered, communities flourish and society becomes stronger. “Empowered Women. Empower Communities. Stronger Together.”

This notice serves to inform the community of Alfred Duma Local Municipality that we are currently experiencing electrical power outage from Eskom in Abattoir Hill reservoir. We are awaiting for their positive feedback. So, it is not possible to start up the booster pumps.

UTHUKELA LEARNER CROWNED JUNIOR PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER

The UThukela District Commissioner, Major General Gonya together with the UThukela District Mayor, Inkosi NB Shabalala congratulated Awande Cebekhulu during the ceremony to officially announce him as the Junior Provincial Commander of KwaZulu Natal. The ceremony was held in the SAPS Ladysmith Boardroom on Monday, August 31. This is a youth leadership programme initiated by SAPS. It sought to give the skills in public speaking and mould the youth to become leaders.

Awande, a 15-year-old learner from Drakensberg Secondary School in Estcourt, represented the uThukela District with aplomb when he tackled violence facing learners and the youth in general during the finals held in University of KwaZulu Natal, Westville Campas. His awareness of the primary causes of bullying at schools, the prevalence of dangerous weapons and substance abuse, coupled with proposed possible solutions, some of them 4IR-inspired, left the adjudicators with no option but to score him the highest. He is also expected to hold this title for a period of two years.

Congratulating the learner, Department of Education District Director Ms Poppy Mokoena said that this was a clear indication of a bright future for the youth of UThukela District. She said just last week they’ve launched a countdown towards final matric exam. “We extend our congratulations to our new Junior Provincial Commissioner for what he has achieved. You have brought honour to our district. The impact you make on people will go a long way towards ensuring that they are taken care of”, she said.

Ms Mokoena then thanked the school and the teachers for their time, support and efforts they put in during the whole process. Major General Gonya was equally delighted with the success of Awande. He said they were proud that he was there to say with them that they were indeed proud for this young man for what he has done. “Pretty soon we are going to make use of him to go around the Province to mimick what the Provincial Commissioner does. If we have young people like him, we will stand up and count on them”, Major General Gonya alluded.

The Mayor was so proud and impressed by the learner’s courage and achievements. His words of encouragement were that, in order to succeed in life one must only think about good things. “You have an obligation to make a difference to yourself first, your family and your community. You need to change the way you conduct yourself completely. The reason why we educate children is to give them tools that will enable them to change their families livelihoods,” said Inkosi Shabalala.

He also encouraged the young man to hold himself professionally all the time. The South African Police Service Junior Commissioner Project is a youth crime prevention initiative that appoints high school learners as junior law enforcement leaders to promote school safety and combat social ills.
